>audio cues from enemies are non existent outside of their big red attacks
>constant off screen attacks that require basically predicting timing because the game is filled with delayed animation slop
>ranged enemies do huge amounts of damage and have as much HP as standard enemies
>absurd damage all around for every enemy
>most bosses kill you in a few hits and also have delayed animation slop
>large blood orbs do not heal you at all compared to blue essence from past games
>your rank is punished severely for using items and dying when that was never the case for NG

the game actively punishes you for not playing the way they want you to play: i.e. using every enemy attack to trigger blood/gleam parries

Quite honestly i feel like the game would be improved by cutting Ryu's chapters and relegating him entirely to an NG+ entity who can play all missions on his own. They obviously had jack shit for budget compared to the rest of the game and i would've preferred a longer last level for Yakumo that REALLY throws all bullshit at you.

Yeah, that's a pain in the ass. I don't know if he's still doing it but there's an account on twitter from a guy who's recompiled unnoficial PC ports of some games called Hinzoto, who said he was working on one for Ninja Gaiden 2 at one point. There was a breif ressurgance of attention towards it after Itegaki died. He wanted others with the capability to help with it. Other than this, it really is your best bet to just get an xbox to run it. When I played it years ago on One X I dont remember any glitches or slowdowns at all, though I'd only played up through warrior difficulty at the time, and that might have lower enemy counts. Playing on an original xbox one, I have epxerienced slowdowns in a FEW areas, mainly the famous staircase fight. This is on an 8 year old somewhat deteriorated xbox one though. I don't know if it's a problem with my machine in particular, but I just figured I'd mention it, to give you an idea.

People talk about abusing UT but I don't get it. You get max 2 kills or just 1 if theyre strong, and no orbs at all if it doesnt kill. And with the amount of dudes you have to kill i can't see it being OP unless theres fish... and even then, absorbing it absorbs ALL of it, with still only max 1-2 kills

I just beat the shark and I have to say I don't particularly enjoy the boss fights. Every single one I've died over and over until I just started fishing for perfect blocks and hit them while they're staggered. NG1 Ryu has a much higher level of commitment than is usual in Action games, there's some cancels you can do with the shurikens and such but its really a game where you make your moves count. You want to balance ultimate technique, get rid of the upgrade that legs you charge it instantly with red orbs, and just make it only have one level. That upgrade is the problem I have with videogame upgrade systems in general. Upgrades are either an essential move that you need to get ASAP or the game feels awful to play, or some busted move that trivialises the game because the devs ran out of standard moves to lock behind the upgrade system. Games need to kill upgrade systems and just have you rely on limited items found through secrets. The item shop needs to go too.

The furthest I got was because I started landing luck backlash parries. I mostly only use block and dodge. Also, what’s the deal with backlash parry? Don't try to clash the attack hitbox, just press it when you're about to get hit, as if it was its own individual input, it'll take over the attack and play the backlash parry animation.
The projectile one isn't a backlash parry though, you probably got it by accident, you want a bloodraven perfect guard for those.
Chapter 5 boss on hard I assume is just phase 2 giving you trouble, right? Just respect his arms, give him space when he's flailing and stay on the move. He usually sends the arm in your direction and it won't return until it finishes the string, so you can get around and hit him during it. You can also hit him a few times in the air while he's floating and sending the beyblade arms to hit you, the beyblade won't leave the ground.

4 seems to follow Sigma canon. NG1/DS Ryu needs the TDS to kill the Dark Dragon, but in Sigma 2 he's grown strong enough to maul the Dark Dragon without needing the TDS. If Mark had actually played NG3RE, he probably would have appreciated the Bloody Rage mechanic since it's the closest a CAG has gotten to a CAVE-like system. The karma multiplier goes up the longer you refrain from using your UT. It's kinda like how Dodonpachi DOJ will increase your combo guage if you keep killing shit without wasting a bomb. In a way, NG3RE treats its UTs the same way DOJ treats bombs. Easy way to kill everything on screen but at the risk of getting less score/karma.

Like no, nigga. NG3RE and NG2 are both very different games. They play very differently from each other. In NG2, you can XXY->SC-> [any input of your choosing] to any jobber human enemy with the DS/TDS to string combos. In NG3RE, this is not a true combo and enemies will break out of it any try to punish you. Instead, NG3RE focuses more on the hold attacks in lieu of shuriken cancels for combos. While shuriken cancels have utility in NG3RE, it's not as potent as NG2. Plus both games handle UTs different. They handle ninpo differently. NG3RE isn't a watered down NG2 because it's nothing like NG2. It's fine to say you like NG2 more and that it's better designed, but if you've played both games then you'd know thaf NG3RE tries to crave its own niche while retaining that NG DNA that was lost in vanilla NG3.

I don't think it's UTs that are the problem here. UTs are fun, the problem is the generic approach of enemies 1 or 2 shotting you on very hard. Either make the damage more manageable, or buff healing. There are already ways to make OTs heal in ng4 but the heal is so weak it pales compared to enemy damage.

That interaction when Yakumo breaks the first statue in Chapter 4 is probably my favorite part in the entire story.

I liked that they gave the Courtesan adds on Master Ninja, great decision. The first encounter is an actual fight now too. Still one of the weaker fights, but a lot cooler. Could map ninpo to hold item button and use the other analog stick to select ninpo.

A lot of his edginess is komyushou too, not just him trying to act tough. He's bad at expressing himself, and very reserved. It's really cool seeing the way the same words gain new meaning as he progresses, his facial expressions say what he can't with words. Him using the same 問題ない he does for every situation when Umi contacts him after Seori's death but after a long pause says a lot more than words could. The story as a whole isn't particularly good or deep, but the characters are really underrated I think.
He's looking at the sun rising again, the clear sky without the blood rain, he knows everything he had to sacrifice to get there, and how far he's come. You can see it in his eyes. But the only words he has to close the story are

It's really great. Very versatile. It's a bit awkward to use in the situations he does, but the other characters treat it as awkward too, Yakumo IS awkward.
Like Umi will ask him in different ways if he's ok, like daijoubu, karada heiki and stuff like that, and instead of replying to "daijoubu?" with "daijoubu", he says the slightly awkward "mondainai", as in "there's no problem (with the mission)"
In the english subtitles they use "I'm fine", which is technically correct, but I feel like it works better in english than it does in japanese, so the awkwardness doesn't come across as much. Checking now on youtube, though, they completely localized away his mannerisms and catchphrases in the english dub, there's no repetition of a specific phrase he uses both to talk about the rails segment on Chapter 2 and Seori's death. He just says "rail collpsed" on chapter 2 and "I'll fill you in later" on chapter 19. That lack of consistency hurts his character development.

DMC5 actually starts off half decently but they gave up incredibly quickly. Yes, it's a linear action game with few branching paths. But Dark Souls wouldn't be the holy grail of level design if what you did between shortcuts didn't matter. It's not just coming back to Firelink after Blighttown, it's the fact that on your way there you need to be aware to not use horizontal slashes and focus on vertical ones of thrust attacks to fight hollows in tight corridors in the Depths, or that great encounter as you're first entering with waist high water, hollows and rats. Level design is how you bring variety to the moment to moment gameplay without diluting the core mechanics.
Exploration is one facet of it, but arena design, enemy placement, level gimmicks are all equally important and the main driving factor in pure action games.
NG4 does have a couple of "does not open from this side" moments too, funnily enough.
