In terms of mainstream consoles it's either Dreamcast or Xbone. Dreamcast took sega out of the console market completely, Xbone has finally had impact and done the same.
In terms of vidya recently concord, anthem, apb, that marvel game, the list goes on forever. But 20 years ago it was Tabula Rasa that nearly sunk ncsoft. I remember there being desperate ads for it in one of the guild wars boxes.

We almost had a Nintendo "PlayStation" which was meant to be a CD based add-on to the Super Nintendo. Nintendo was working with Sony to develop this hardware but then surprised Sony by turning their backs on them and going with Philips instead to make those notoriously shitty Philips CDI games.

Sony was like "well FUCK Nintendo we'll just make our own console!" and now they're Nintendo's biggest rival in the console market. If Nintendo had just worked with Sony instead of turning their backs on the company the video game industry would be massively different today.

I wouldn't be surprised. Something to remember is that Microsoft and Sony are huge companies with their hands in multiple different industries. So while Nintendo lives or dies based on their video games, Microsoft and Sony have other avenues of making money.

For example there was a time when HD DVD and Blu-Ray were competing to be the next successor to DVDs. Putting Blu-Ray functionality into PS3s cost Sony a bunch of money but it might have ultimately been the reason why Blu-Ray won out in the end so Sony probably considered it worth it since Blu-Rays are a Sony product.

Not exactly. In Japan they have sort of a master patent and that was granted on filed in 2021 and granted in 2023.
What Nintendo did in 2024 was apply for a branch patent for that one idea and some "anonymous" person sent examples of prior art to the JPO but instead of checking each instance properly, because literally none of the examples follow Nintendo's patent, they just gave Nintendo 60 days to resubmit.

Basically even if this were rejected outright they would still own that patent as part of the master patent which is what they're suing them with, not the branch.

Sony implemented it tipped the balance between the three major companies making it a standard, on top of that they advertised it in a way that made people think that it was a good thing and that improvements would come from it so not only did they standardise it, they popularised it.

Being brand new doesn't automatically mean that it's expensive anon, disc based formats are generally inexpensive from a cost to storage ratio where it takes pennies to manufacture and sell in bulk.

But the discs and readers had still to be produced. Actual manufacturing isn't free.

People also forget that it was supposed to be always online, you couldn't play your single player games with out being connected to the internet.
They dropped it prior to the consoles release due to the immense backlash.
The moment I saw that announcement I went from being a die hard Xbox fanboy to having negative interest in the Xbone.
They really should have known better seeing how EA was getting absolutely shit on due to always online requirements for their single player games, the last SimCity was dead on arrival because of that.

There was an interview with one of the Xbox guys not long after the 360 launched. When he was asked why not just call it the Xbox 2, he said that they didn't want to be "a number behind Sony" that they believed it could cause confusion with parents that might simply think "bigger number newer" and hurt sales.
Nintendo's was just the style at the time, no one simply number their consoles back then.
