If there are hot girls you can romance, I will play as a male and try to self insert.
But if not (like in a Bethesda game) then having to care about the growth of your character, what clothes they wear, what they are good or bad at, what their personality is etc... ends up feeling to me like I'm crafting the perfect spouse, so I will obviously choose the female option.

I've been an MMO junkie for my entire adult life, I've got two decades of experience with it.
When I was younger I played male characters and at a certain point I got over my insecurities and just played whatever I felt like without worrying about it.
Let me tell you, nobody treats you ANY differently based on your avatar, how you get treated is based on how you play and how you speak. If you don't flirt with people then they won't try to ERP with you out of nowhere.
Generally speaking, nobody cares, people are just trying to do whatever content. If you aren't actively looking for trannies you probably won't find them.
