Have you ever been hardlocked in a video game? Where even if you reset the system you are still fucked with no way out?

What?

A softlock means the game is still running but you can't progress in the game at all. A crash is when the game freezes and won't run. Bricking a computer or console is when the entire computer is unable to run. If you mean the save file is fucked, that's a file corruption. Or maybe you bricked a memory card if you've corrupted the whole thing beyond saving.

I've not heard someone say hardlock, but it sounds like you have a save file corruption. And yes, that has happened. A lot of the time, it happens if the system loses power as the game is being saved and the resulting file can't be read properly.

Hardlock isn't the correct term for what you're describing, you dumb serenaposter. A hard lockup is a freeze that renders the software entirely unresponsive.

Softlocked is where you can restart the level or load the last save and continue, the game can still be completed
Hardlocked is where doing the above doesn't salvage the situation and the only action is to completely start over.
Best example that comes to mind is only having one save and quicksaving the frame before something kills you.

It's a divisive one, personally I like it, but real time combat in RPGMaker takes a bit of getting use to and the overall tone of the game may be a bit too grim for some (there's moments of levity too, but overall world is more on the bleak side).

Mass Effect 1 on 360, disabled autosave for both space reasons and autism reasons, didn't keep multiple/backup saves because lol bioware, not a hard game. Without really thinking too much about it, saved in an elevator on Noveria. You normally can't save in elevators, but somehow they forgot to disable saving in one particular case. Guess why they don't let you do that.

in Prince of Persia Sands of Time there is a way to permanently fuck your save file.

there is an elevator fairly deep into the game and if i recall you fight enemies as the elevator goes up, there is a save spot right before and there is a small window where you can make the elevator go up but also walk off of it as it goes up without you with no way to call it back down, saving bricks your save as when you reload the elevator will be gone.

Warrior Within had something like that, if you save after the second fight with Shahdee and leave the game, once you load it back up you'll play as the sand wraith, you're supposed to go through that room as the wraith later into the game but in the fucked up save you're still in the early game. I think there's no way to leave the area without dying.

In Prince of Persia Warrior Within I got to the garden section earlier than I was supposed to and a closed door was blocking my progress. I couldn't backtrack either because the "crossroad room" switch/lever thing wasn't in the right sequence.

I accidentally broke the water dungeon in TP by jumping down a ledge to access an area in the dungeon too early. I used a key to open that door and suddenly I was left key starved and couldn't continue the dungeon. Naturally I had saved at some point after opening that door and the save file was completely fucked.

Closest I can think of is getting the freeze upon loading a save in old versions of Doom 2 and it's derivatives, triggered by saving the game while certain actions like Mancubus shooting fireballs or a monster spawner being active.

However, since you can just idclev back onto the map you were playing this isn't nearly that bad.

35, this is the first thread I've heard "hardlocked". Softlock is as was described earlier in the thread: you have to reset the game to get out of the situation. Hardlocked would be some shit where a glitch makes the game completely unplayable after a reset. I can't think of enough examples where we need a term for this, I guess save corruption should count but until there's other examples, "save corruption" should suffice for the term.
