Even without all the issues with vr that others have already mentioned, the reason why it didn't become "the default" is that every vr game has to be first person, which is extremely limiting for most video games. Sure, technically you could play tetris in vr, but why would you? While the sense of depth and scale might be cool, overall it's just a worse experience for games that don't rely on first person pov and a sense immersion. And when we take a look at the various fps on the market we'll see that vr only allows for relatively slow gameplay which also feels samey due to the controls. Meanwhile "traditional" fps vary greatly in their speed and movement mechanics and so on from one game to another.

Honestly if VR was everything predicted in 2015, it got plenty of AAA games, people didn't get sick, it would still probably not be "default" the same way playing outside isn't. Maybe most major games would have a VR mode though.
Using VR as a flat game handheld replacement for arbitrary screen size and stereo 3D absolutely could become default though. I think nintendo will eventually respond to things like the valve deckard

> It is likely also the earliest example of what was later termed the first-person shooter genre and is considered along with the 1974 space flight simulation game Spasim to be one of the "joint ancestors" of the genre.
>Maze is a multiplayer first-person shooter maze game in which players traverse a flat maze and shoot opponents to score points. The maze layout is represented by a grid of spaces that are either empty or solid and form a flat plane containing walls of equal height. The game contains a default maze layout, but players can provide their own upon starting the game. The player can move forward and backwards between spaces at a rate of one space per key press and can turn left or right or look behind themselves in 90-degree increments.
Most of your VR games don't have any movement at all, and the ones that do move with the same level of mechanical skill as a game from 1973. A game that pioneered first person movement.

Zoning out staring at a screen laying on the couch while holding a controller that you can use completely subconsciously turns out to be much more effective.

Like most new tech the first and most important application is porn. Making a new, superior, mainstream version of vrchat that was better than "giant futa with 4 foot horse cock bangs a tiny anime loli with half the cock clipping through the top of her head while some tranny moans into his mic" could make a billion dollars if there was a timeline where it could be made professionally but also not be sanitized to fuck.

2. Rendering a scene twice, once for each eye, is a death sentence for modern "devs", who just drag 'n drop shit in whatever engine's popular and know optimization only as a myth from the olden days.

Coinciding with the hype for mobile gaming meant that it was first tainted and then discarded.
Now it would be pretty trivial for most games to have VR modes, but games right now are completely mismanaged asset flips, so that's not going to happen.
All of the development for VR now effectively enthusiast stuff.
The real issue with VR is that it's impossible to market outside of hype periods that convince normalfags, because you can't record b-roll of celebs and actors wearing it for advertisement.

I think that at the very least the companies making games became convinced that normalfags hated it, since Sony memory-holed the gyro functionality of the DS4 for most of the console's lifespan, the Wii U pro controller had no gyro functionality and Xbox hasn't made any attempt to add even just a cheap gyro to their controllers.
Adding motion controls to handheld controllers was the next logical step if companies were going to insist on continuing to use handheld controllers.

I literally don't own anything superfluous at all, no merch, no decorations, nothing, I think that shit's stupid trash. I'm a live-in caretaker, my bedroom is a repurposed office room, there's a huge desk that weighs about 400lbs covered in paperwork that's not mine taking up half the room, and there's a "portable" storage closet that weighs about 300lbs. Both are old enough that they're lodged in the floor and can't be moved.
Funny enough, I went full grid paper and measuring every inch and redesigned the whole room, changing my floorspace from 2'x4' to 3'x4' and unblocking one of the three wall power outlets, so VR is a lot easier than it was.
I've considered swapping out my twin bed for a sleeping mat I can roll up, but I don't play enough VR to justify that, and the bed's fairly new so it'd be a waste to get rid of it anyway.
It all works out, I've got my Quest 2 and an IR illuminator, so I play at night in the dark sometimes.

Unfortunately this. It's surprising how much Facebook poisoned the VR well simply with their presence. All good will and hope for VR just evaporated immediately as soon as they showed up. I mean before Facebook purchased Oculus, Valve was technically their rival, but they were also sharing technical data with them freely at no cost, simply in the hopes that they make a good VR headset. I wonder if Valve regrets that giving away data freely that would later be bought up by Facebook.

It's all minimum effort and if you are lucky, then it applies lessons from games made 3 years prior and doesn't include significant regressions.
Waggle is just as much a problem as devs insisting on only including button combinations, rather than letting you rebind every action yourself, or devs making MKB and Xinput the only two mutually exclusive options.
Tech wasn't ready, VR is basically just a scam. Until we get literal Star Trek holodecks VR will never really take off.

>Lacks apps and funding for apps
UEVR and similar mods show that this would be easily remedied with even a minimum of effort from devs. This isn't a barrier for VR so much as it's a barrier for competent development in general. Having fewer codified best practices is also better than flat gaming, which has multiple sets of codified worst practices by now, like using dual analog free camera control schemes from the 2000s.
>Requires an unreasonable amount of free and empty space
It really doesn't unless you have multiple unreasonable uses of your free and empty space or you live in a barracks with 20 other people in NYC or something.
>cuts off all vision and hearing when in use which is inherently off-putting and uncomfortable
Passthrough means that for VR desktop use, it's very unobtrusive. For full VR use, you don't notice it because your sensorium is being replaced by something else. This is only a problem for paranoid schizophrenics and this one anon who keeps taking off his headset in a panic after I'm already gone.

There's a complete video guide on how to run almost any UE4 games in VR, just using VorpX(all games are running in DX11 until 2023 so that's the only tool you actually need), since like 2016, and nobody ever bothered googling for 5sec to see if such VR mod already exists or not.

You fags can't even agree on what's VR, you don't even know what kind of games you can play and spout the same "muh alyx, muh beatsaber" ad nauseum.
There's a reason why communities formed around VR exclusively because the burden of having to actually search for your entertainement is too much when a fucking retarded failed normalfag like yourself can simply hop on steam and buy FOTM shit like Megabonk to get his temporary dopamine injection.

To expensive when it came out, produces issues such as motion sickness and being to immersed enough that you lose track of your surroundings causing issues, most games for VR are still either in beta testing, stuck as demos to demonstrate VR capabilities but rarely making a full game, are remakes or knockoffs of already existing games, or just incomplete.
Also, players loathe doing physical activity to just play when they want to pass the time playing shit, and VR encourages you to do that.
It would be neat of there was way more VR games and prices drop, but there still would be plenty of issues.

Everything about it, at this point, is uncomfortable. You have a headset strapped to your head which means that maybe you can go an hour before you start to feel some kind of strain on your neck.
It's also just a space factor. VR requires lots of open floor space and considering most people are living in cluttered boxes then they simply don't have the space to enjoy the headset fully.

You can play DOAX and Summer Lesson on PSVR1 for hours, and you'll feel almost nothing because the headset is actually ultra light due to the perfect balancing and the lenses are designed to float like 5mm above your eyes, and the head strap that carries the weight doesn't even touch your face.

The paradox of VR is that the best way to play video games inside a virtual reality is by simulating a flat screen in that 3D world.
Contrary to what Western people think, video games are not just interactive audio-visual experiences like the trash they produce (Half Life, Uncharted, Cyberpunk, etc.), video games are abstract games with their own rules. Thinking that an abstract game that is viewed on a flat plane will be better in three dimensions is the same as thinking that the Star Trek's chess game Spock plays is more than just a silly thing that the guys invented because it looked futuristic.
It's no wonder that the best VR applications are for simulators. In a simulator, you don't want to abstract anything, you want to replicate reality, and then it makes perfect sense to create a 3D virtual world. But most people don't even call simulators video games.

Two retards who think that their shitty 3D social simulations for faggots they like are the same thing as video games.
Virtual reality is NOT for video games. It's for simulating experiences. You're not going to put highly abstract games (which are the best games, unlike the trash you consume like cattle, since you're low-IQ normalfags) into virtual reality and make them better. On the contrary, you're going to remove the abstraction and turn what was something sophisticated into a toy for children to interact with like idiots until they feel nauseous and start vomiting.
You're so clueless that you have the mentality of a 1990s businessman who thought that if he gave the player a controller where they could punch and kick in the air, it would make Street Fighter much better...
VR technology is just not far enough along to fulfil the fantasy.

You just make your view the camera. This is still VR and is a good way to play games since a 3D world is best viewed in 3D. That aside, you can also still keep the abstraction when using motion controls. You use 1:1 motion when it makes sense and add abstract inputs when they make sense. Your argument falls apart if I just agree with you and also keep VR as abstract games with their own rules.

Me and the entirety of the global population, yes.
Video games are mass consumption products, which means they need to be affordable enough to reach at least 30 million sales, so games will sell on it, which attract developers that make games for it in first place.
A $1000 device will only sell to a handful of people and will not be worth making games for it at all.

10 series feature over the 900 series was it's VR ready, the next feature was Raytracing, then Crypto mining and now AI. All of them were bubbles to some degree. Over hyped to investors and the public by corporate marketing. Then they find out that the market in reality is much smaller then what was being promised. A bunch of companies lose money but GPU manufactures make money so they keep repeating the process.

Above all else, there's really no killer app that's worth investing into VR.

Imo if your goal is just to try, you are better off buying a quest 2 for like 50-100$ used. (Same lenses as 3s) and then you can put more funds towards a quest 3 and/or upgrading pc (if you know you like it cause all the real VR is on pc almost exclusively through mods)

Quest 3s is more of a side grade. Quest 3 or wait for something new. Quest 3 is already old enough I'd wait for something new imo (classically vr headsets have a 2 year life cycle for upgrades). Likely from valve cause Quest 4 is delayed indefinitely.

Needs to integrate with flatscreen gaming to lessen the friction and make it more viable.
Plus the form factor is still too bulky for a lot of normal people to actually consider using VR as their daily gaming driver.
big screen beyond 2 at a Quest 3 MSRP with OLED screens, foveated rendering, facial + eye tracking, new deckard like controllers, and haptics will be the version of this tech that finally "takes off".
Can I play anything worthwhile with a Quest 2 and a 6600 xt?
I think it's kind of a red flag how easy it is to find used quests for sale but the low prices make me want to give VR a try.

VRChad here. I really enjoy VR games, but it's easy to see why it failed.
>Way too expensive, your only cheap entry is if you're willing to let one of the most notoriously privacy invasive companies get a full scan of your room
>Said company signs a shitload of exclusivity deals, fragmenting the market to platforms that get upgraded and lose compatibility across generations
>Most people have jobs that keep them physically active, the last thing you wanna do when you get home is be more physically active
>Lots of VR software is trash, genuinely bottom of the barrel stuff that would be considered shovelware if it was a 2D game. There are a few exceptions but they are rare and the average user has not heard of all of the good stuff because low ROI means low marketing budget, leaving a lot of hidden gems on the table
>You can LITERALLY get plebfiltered out of VR by your genetics, where you get too motion sick to play its coolest games like boneworks due to how you get jostled around, leaving you only universal studios rides like half life alyx which are terrified of doing anything that might make you sick but limit the game's pace as a result
>People who haven't used VR genuinely think VR is imprecise wii wagglan and not straight up 1:1 control of an avatar
>One of the surprisingly best use cases for VR, which is giving you a HUD... where you interact with 2D elements like you do already outside of VR without having to set up a whole table, requires you to A: deal with a screen door effect, and B: wear a thing on your face that gets sweaty and uncomfortable after a while, we don't have any VR headset that has built in fans like those old airflo playstation 2 controllers, so this is gonna be forever a problem unless that changes
>VRChat has an amazing wealth of potential and content that showcases VR at its best if you know where to look, but is run and occupied by pedos and drama seeking troons making it radioactive to most mentally well people

Turn the whole platform into night city with raunchy/funny/extreme ads for IRL products fucking everywhere. Personalised ads based on your group tags, that sorta shit.

>Gene filter
I think it depends a lot on the conditions. I get variably motion sick from VR and flat games alike, sometimes a lot, but usually not at all. Remember to hydrate, set up correctly and so on.
>People being retarded
It is unfortunate that VR is impossible to market unless the market generates a lot of momentary hype that fools the normalfags into thinking that everyone is buying it, so they also need to buy it to fit in
>HUD
Yes, I mostly use my headset as a very large monitor, it is very comfy and I can play anywhere without risking another TV to my retardation.

VR is great with about 5 asterisks. It wouldnt be hard to make it perfect but it would mean ponying up thousands of dollars for a headset.
Anyways the problem with VR is as follows
The screens look like a 480p monitor from the year 2000. Ideally they would look as good as my OLED does.
The headset is too heavy and has shitty battery life. These wouldnt be a problem if VR was still wired only and pc only and not running on shitty android hardware.
There is no support for VR games. All the best games are VR mods which are glitchy and unoptimized as fuck.
Fix those things and youve got a winner.
They skipped ahead to trying to make mass market headsets for cheap prices when the software wasnt mature and they hadnt even managed to get the hardware right at the high end first. Now development has been shot in the foot.
Ive been playing Alien Isolation in VR and damn does it make it actually scary. The game isnt scary at all outside of VR but it sure is glitchy as fuck and not designed with VR in mind. Amazing how good it is considering

you are just making shit up
there is virtually 0 virtamate anime content
all you have is 1 shitty webm
if that shit was actually prevalent I would have seen more of it over the years
and why we even discussing that garbage in the first place.
you might as well just fire up blender than use that trash
it's not a fucking game, it's low quality play pretend scene viewer

i've been monitoring everything (dlsite, itch.io, fanza, f95, you name it) for a couple of years
literally nothing worthwhile, 0, null

VaM is more effort than its worth and Gaben will eventually steal your money thanks to VISA/Mastercard. What do you want me to say?
I will admit that horny anime catgirls (female) actually exist on VRChat, but good luck finding any that aren't taken. Best you can do is flirt with a chick whose husband is playing games feet away from her IRL.

I might as well go outside and find a real girlfriend, even if she'll be fat.
