Rentals. If a game was really fucking hard the chances of you beating it with one rental was very low. More rentals = more money.

You're not supposed to take too long to get good at them, some people are just slow. You're supposed to get into the "zone" with them, a gaming high.

This, but old games also had extremely limited space. Devs would make their games insanely hard because otherwise people would beat them in an afternoon. They often playtested their own games and they'd make them hard because they were good at them and knew how they worked
