Old Cash Grab games. These, however, are the ones that may as well have survived because they were that influential or enthralling and have devoted communities to them to this day.

This is a troll thread but I'll say it regardless: most old games are outdated trash. Granted, there are some legendary titles which stood the test of time, but easily 98% of old games are hot garbage due to limitations in technology and should be left on the shelf and only serve as inspiration if we want to pursue something better. This includes Morrowind but also Oblivion and Skyrim

27yo boomer here. I never understood the appeal of runescape. It seems like the game is a complete time-waster to me. At least in single player games you can enjoy the story but afaik the game is not even worth for that.
That said I don't get the appeal of ARPGS either. That gameplay loop of grinding to have a better character to grind more and harder enemies over and over again, I just don't get the point. It's different with pvp mmos, because at least you could say your character improvement has an actual interaction in the game world with others

Good modern ARPGs have various system mechanics that make putting a character together an enjoyable experience. It's the process of coming up with an idea and seeing it through to completion with some RNG elements added to loot. Runescape is literally just grinding with zero mechanical skill or any thought needed.

I am perfectly aware of that, seeing the player count every new Path of Exile league gets. It's just that I feel in the case of RC there are others mmos which have the whole "make your character strong" thing while also having more interaction with the rest of the people you play with. I get people liking those genres, I just find amusing they're so massive. The same happens to me with 4x games. They look like the most boring shit ever yet HoI has frequently 40k users on steam.
For me, games like morrowind scratch that itch of exploring a big world and making your character powerful and famous while also having an interesting writing, so the whole gameplay doesn't devolve on being stronger and stronger

The late 90s/early 00s era of games (especially on PC) millennials are nostalgic for was the beginning of the end of gaming. The most sloppy garbage imaginable. WRPGs since then are glorified VNs with awful westoid art styles with the worst gameplay you could think of tacked on. Everything else was some tech demo movie game like Half Life, a trend that millennials are the primary perpetuaters of. You think ADHD zoomers are the ones playing GoW or RDR2? Fortnite isn't that bad in comparison; there is a modicum of skill and competitiveness needed for any multiplayer game that simply doesn't exist at all for semi-interactive cutscene "games".
