So I recently finished Dolls Nest and ended up enjoying it way more than I expected. The ammount of build variety makes finding new equipment exciting and I appreciate that the game actually rewards you for exploring the areas. I saw some anon critisize the size of the levels but I found drifting through them really enjoyable.
Bosses were kind of meh most of the time though. Also, why is this game so horrible optimized? There were certain areas where I had constant 20 fps

Where specifically? I had a few areas where I experienced random frame drops and stuttering, and it turns out that it was actually Kaspersky's passive file scanning interfering with it. The only remaining areas with this issue were the interior sections of the Water Treatment Plant, probably because of the mist particles.

Yes the water treatment levels were bad. The small section before you reach the elevator that leads to the water treatment levels was the worst offender. My artilery shells would also cause frame drops despite me having effects turned to minimum. I just got used to the game being laggy so I can't tell you which areas were bad and which ones were fine. The game also hates it if you break crates

The developers are known for their VN's, this is their first 3D action game release.

Post processing is what kills performance in water areas. Turn that down to medium or so and watch your frames double.
Also, forcing it to run with dx12 helped in general for me. Thought I did play it on Linux with Proton.

The viable build variety is pretty bad, man. It's like if someone looked at the cost of running only grenade cannons in AC and went "let's do that but x10"
You use an assault rifle and Sabi or you just get fucked by BP. Everything else is so comically inefficient in comparison that you're gimping yourself
I've never seen a game so intent on forcing you NOT to use the fun weapons you just picked up

Nah I ran a beam rifle and dual plasma cannons with a melee as a backup and it was fine. You only got fucked on BP if you spammed the plasma cannons to burst down every enemy when the beam rifle deals with them a bit slower but for cheap.

Forgot doll (I used the rocket legs for exploration as the other equipment).

It was the opposite for me, everything I found/bought was garbage compared to the starting stuff you get in the tutorial. Also senpaitachi makes every other weapon irrelevant other than for aesthetic purposes.

I ran the game totally fine below its listed minimum specs with 60 FPS.
