People glaze over this game only because it was technically superior to the 1st entry. Everything else is worse. The writing, the music, the levels, worse filler content, washed out colors compared to the original (something the remake actually fixed).

I emulated both 1 and 2 recently. 1 had easy going gameplay, had the nicer arstyle with the 3D sprites and the ending packed quite the punch. 2 had tougher challenges, cool new Moos and an ending that softened the blow of the previous one. It also helped me accept that there's probably not much of a future for Klo, cos all that matters was the fun time I had with him.

Klonoa never sold well because it was a 2D game when gaming was starting to become 3D by default. Unless you were a veteran franchise like Castlevania or Mega Man X you could not get away with being 2D during those years.

Klonoa when you think about it deserved to become a failure. I don' know why Namco kept making puzzle platformers for Klonoa. The only time they made a Klonoa game that wasn't a puzzle platformer was freaking Klonoa Heroes as it was an Action RPG but instead of being like Mega Man Zero for example it was a tedious ugly overhead style game, like a bastardized version of the Mana series. After you defeat the KoS. Popka says Klonoa has become more like Claire (because he reversed the purge she initially performed).
