Sometime around 2016-ish every game became incredibly easy. There was a gradual downturn already taking place for a while, but it just tanked from then on. I think this is part of why Souls really started to take off at that point. Those games actually require you to somewhat think about what you’re doing.

I like hard modes when they require more skill, or when they ask you to really pay attention to details, but we all know that sometimes, they just make the game more tedious than anything.

Long before then. Dark Souls 1 blew up because it came at a time when games increasingly started to lick your balls in the attempt to make you feel like a badass without asking anything in turn. Then DS1 came and told players to git good. Which they loved.
