Wesker didn't return though. One of the most respectable things Capcom has ever done is actually kill off their main villain for their flagship series, and kept him dead for over 10 years.
Of course when the inevitably dogshit RE5make comes out and revives interest in the character the next RE game is bound to have him come back in a horrific asspull.

Vidya sequels are only written after the first game is released and every game could be the last in the series. Movies, especially blockbusters, are planned long in advance there is no excuse. Avatar had 4 movies produced at the same time. Star Wars the same.
You can't write yourself into a hole like you do with one at a time production schedules.

It's not inevitable because even in the year it came out back in 2009 the left was getting all offended about it due to the visuals of a white guy shooting up a bunch of Africans.

Keep in mind this was years before Trayvon, George Floyd, Black Lives Matter, Gamergate, Trump, etc. Since have gotten way more politically charged since then so trying to release the game now would be a political shitshow. Yeah but the thing is that almost all the outrage came from people who never actually played the game so they were for the most part just getting offended by the trailers.

Seeing stuff like the OOGA BOOGA witch doctors or Sheeva in a sexy fan service tribal costume is stuff that would have required them to actually play the game.

Not just for the race reasons, but downgrading Sheva's alt costumes so that they're modest like RE4R Ashley, making voice lines safer etc.

Usually, it's because the character comes with a new boss fight with all the bells and whistles that come with that. Help, some of these characters are funny or super cool. So bringing them back is usually not a bad thing.

Disney's ownership of Star Wars is impressively incompetent. Even when they did score rare wins in terms of new content, they went so incredibly far out of their way to squander each and every one of them. They've also crippled what was once an invincible turnkey-operation merchandising juggernaut.

As bad as their handling of Marvel is, it's nowhere near on the same level. And we're talking about handling that included embargoing Fantastic Four and X-Men (despite both being important IPs for the shared Marvel universe) from content beyond basic comics, out of spiteful resentment for Marvel signing away the film rights to those IPs to FOX at the turn of the millennium (Disney buying out FOX solved that issue, but it's waaaaaaay too little too late to incorporate them into the MCU to good effect). Seriously, the embargo period was so fucking petty that Marvel artists were officially forbidden from even DRAWING F4/X-Men characters at conventions.

I think Marvel temporarily benefited from the MCU already being underway with Iron Man 1 having recently come out after the buyout and a general roadmap and production for the next few years already being established. Versus having to spearhead an entire new Star Wars trilogy at minimum.
