It was literally never that, it was basically a platform that let teenagers develop their own simple games and as time went on the games got more and more robust and started being developed by actual professional devs, especially when there was suddenly real world money to be made in them
I honestly think the pedo issue is overblown, there's gonna be nonces in every game made for kids, it's only a bigger problem now than it was ever on someplace like, say, Club Penguin or whatever, because it's in the current day, more people are online hence there's more pedos in general on the web, as well as more kids, they've become better at their hunting tactics learning what kids like, and kids in turn became dumber, more hypersocialized, more easily baited by "content" and fake online clout than candy or toys could ever do, and they're not taught the safety rules of the web anymore because doing so would dismantle several industries and a generation's worth of mindwashing
