The mech autism crown isn't that big, it's all focused on mechwarrior and the like while anime mecha relies on characters, storyline and brand recognition/designs, everybody knows what a Gundam is by now, it's iconic. You can't make a ton of money off of robots, you have to attach the human element through likeable characters.
They should have invested into writing a story based game because then people get invested into the characters first, and then the mechs are extensions of those characters. Again, the robot autism crowd is very very very small, Armored Core 6 didn't sell that good either and that one has no anime asses or breasts either. 3 million copies is good for a mecha game but unimpressive otherwise.
This is a misunderstanding of what the audience that exists wants. They should go and study Gundam SEED/Destiny or w/e Gundam shows are popular, barring witch from mercury and Iron blooded orphans, those were nuGundam shows which don't have actual mecha audience as a target.
Also the monetization wasn't that well planned out, almost forgot to mention that one. Having to pay 50$ for an unique character+mech combo is a wee bit much, you have to ease the players in by creating appealing characters first and for that you need to have a solid writing team.
