Okay but nobody holds the controller with the buttons and sticks facing directly up. We hold it facing us so the stick goes up when we look up and down when we look down.

i enjoy flight sims with a proper joystick, but if i'm using an xbox controller i prefer the plane to move in the direction i'm pointing the sticks. my brain doesn't really make the jump between "flying a plane" and the tiny thumbsticks you see on a handhled controller. trying to make it more "plane-like" is kind of like art programs forcing traditional media programs in a failed attempt to feel familiar.

They're both wrong. Analog thumbsticks are for controlling characters, not camera perspectives, so you're moving a secondary character up or down on the Z axis.
For most games this secondary character is the cursor.
Of course for the far better flickstick you are controlling your character's heading viewed from the top down and the gyro becomes a representation of the head.
>>725094157
You are spending your time and concentration on controlling a character who doesn't do anything, it's basically NTR.
Anonymous No.725098673 [Report]
Planes only have invented vertical controls because early on, the pilot was physically pulling a wire to lift the elevator and it was easier to design it that way

Imagine an axis (a line) going straight through the head of the character in the direction of forward movement.
Imagine now you place a point anywhere along that line to serve as a basis when rotating the head. If that was hard to imagine/understand, think instead of the axis being locked to the point (and the player), and joystick movement moving the point up or down respectively.
If the point is behind the character, you get inverted controls. If it is infront, you get normal controls
In other words, there's no 'correct' answer (although normal controls are infinitely better)
Hope this helps.
