Imagine an axis (a line) going straight through the head of the character in the direction of forward movement.
Imagine now you place a point anywhere along that line to serve as a basis when rotating the head. If that was hard to imagine/understand, think instead of the axis being locked to the point (and the player), and joystick movement moving the point up or down respectively.
If the point is behind the character, you get inverted controls. If it is infront, you get normal controls
In other words, there's no 'correct' answer (although normal controls are infinitely better)
Hope this helps.
