Well, yeah, obviously I know what happened with episode 3, but I'd say this is different. They didn't consciously say "fuck the fans let's actually not make it and leave them with a cliffhanger". They tried to make ep3, but couldn't make it good enough, then felt it had been too long and an episode was no longer enough and dropped it. If they made another spin-off now, it would be a conscious decision to do that instead of HL3, despite knowing what the fans are expecting and how they'd react.
