There are barely any change between old WHM and current, only less things. You mentionned Aero 3, that was removed when Misery was added that both did better damage on average and offered new mobile weaving window. No mater how you look at it, it's a more interesting and intricate tool. There's no other positive evolution in this game like WHM had, every single itteration is better than the previous one and yes I do count SB in it. WHM was the by default healer as long as AST was worse and got discarded when balance got buffed because no matter how much you like it or not, WHM did nothing. Current WHM could leverage enough cleric stance as it is to be playable (it would bad, but playable) even without short cast time, but the same without lillies ? It would immediatly become detrimental to any party. Even with Aero 3, even with 15sec instant DoT. Wether people like or dislike it is completly annecdotical, the job couldn't keep up with the way the game was played.

SB lillies were not bad, when you were doing those dungeon with mitigation allergic paper tanks, you could see how the basics of the system worked but the game wasn't played like this, a GCD focused healer was an entirely lost cause in FF XIV, every GCD suck when you like as DPS as ressource. So either you would nuke the entire oGCD defensive planing that was getting organized or play into it. ShB decided to play into and this specific moment it was actually the correct answer. It did pan out poorly and stricly adding nothing but defensive CD to the game just birthed new different issues, rewinding everything into the previous isn't a solution, it is just blind nostalgia.

I'm not hating in HW, it had good thing about it, overall it was a way simpler game despite all you hear about, most of the jobs could be understood by just playing them messing up wasn't extremly punishing, but it was also relying a way more fondamental understanding of the game as whole. Most of the job actually very similar to each other but it made sense in a game were you can just play everything, cross class action made it crucial to actually play everything. But once the playerbase understood how it worked properly, there was no going back, the puzzle was solved and the answer was trick attack. Once again, there's two options : you remove it or you play into it. They decided to play into it, it's the correct answer.

If it was about mistake made by the lastest expansion, there's bunch of them. The longer duration DoT on healers, complete removal of ennimity, making every burst in the game a standard (it's good to note this made over time by player request, it was never "we decided this is the correct course of action" but "we keep seeing people disfatisfied their job canot left out from burst phases so we're puting every one on the same plane"). I would rather those new issues to be fixed than insisting on getting old dysfunctionnal systems like we're getting with AST for two expansions in a raw, in the hope that whinning enough is going to bring back the other dysfunctionnal system back. I saw people swear countless time that old Royal road was better ShB, it was re-introduced in the game and it was still bad for the exact same reason it was bad it. Now we have utility cards, they are bad for the exact same reason they were before. It's done, that game is solved, there's nothing to see. Nostalgia is fixing this game, it's already stagnant there's nothing to gain making it regress it needs actual good new stuff.

Managing TP/MP/Enmity (all three for DRK), MP not being fixed at 10k meaning late in the expansion you had more resources due to mp costs scaling with level, phys ranged performing a more meaningful support role that sometimes had to have its timing coordinated in fights without a lot of downtime, bursts of different jobs not auto-aligning to match each other, phase pushes dependent on reaching certain HP thresholds that could change how you want to handle your rotation, skills and buffs having unique effects or drawbacks such as old Blood For Blood or Ninja's choice between stun or silence, range on heals and support buffs being lower requiring the party to focus more on positioning (everyone grouping for cure III was a thing, especially in solo heal runs), DoTs inherently having more complexity then fire-and-forget CD's, stances on tanks actually effecting what skills do (such as fell cleave being pure damage vs inner beast granting 5s of more mit), weakness reducing all stats meaning anyone who died would need special attention given to them to make sure they survived aoe's, death also demolished resources and meant other players would have to give them a hand so they could press their buttons, and on and on and on.

The thing about the "puzzle being solved" was that in reality it was a playerbase problem more than a game one, at least after Gordias. Job selection had already begun to matter significantly less in Midas meaning you could probably take any job into a fight and be able to clear it as long as you weren't bad. This needs to be the metric that we shoot for. Trying to "give every job it's own chance to shine and identity" is literally impossible if you want the jobs to all be within 5% of each other on every fight. Differences fundamentally result in imbalances. Some fights will favor 90s bursts over 120s or vice versa depending on the timing of mechanics, fights with a lot of downtime will always favor jobs with more of their dps being in CD's rather than dots or even the job gauge, any favoring of physical or magical defense/offense will result in some jobs being better for some fights, and again I could go on.

There is no way you can make this game more interesting from an RPG perspective without resulting in greater imbalances that result in a meta comp. So the only good new stuff they could theoretically do is try to make it more interesting from an action game perspective, but the game is so jank I doubt they'd be able to implement anything like that.

THIS is the difference between old and new FFXIV. The way you see Aero 3 and the way I see it are incompatible.

We did NOT lose Aero 3 because Misery was added. We lost Aero 3 because it was a DPS gain that required maintenance. The goal with Misery was not "more interesting design"...it was "less stressful design".

Aero 3 was part of WHM's dps rotation that required reapplication. It was also on a different + shorter timer than Aero 2, but also was a pretty good potency DoT. The longer it took to reapply, was a DPS loss. The harder you clipped it, was a DPS loss. It required you to plan around your DOT timers.

Misery is a passive ability that gains charges as you use lilies. Its potency seems high.... but that is literally just because when you get, it has potency equal to 3 GCD casts of your 1 DPS spell...meaning it is not a DPS gain (at first), its literally just offsetting the DPS loss you incur by spending GCD on healing.

i said it was the same because your original post mention WHM core was doing high potency AoE damage, misery is doing just that. I say it's more intricate because it have a lot of moving part. Lillies are passive, but Misery isn't you have to spend lillies to use it and lilly usage is much less straighforward than Aero 3, a DoT you simply refresh every 24sec. Lillies were effectively 225 potency per cast if you used misery at the end, meaning they were strong healing/moving tools that had a free heal attached to them, it's a very clever way to give a GCD healing that is actually something you can optimise arround. Especially some note extremly specific scenario could make them damage positive like spending lillies in downtime, hitting multiple targets or hitting buffs.

Sure you can have both that and Aero 3 but saying that WHM used to be a job with high AoE but it's not anymore, it's just false. Like now you're saying Lillies are here to remplace "what was removed from the job", but what was removed from it ? It remplace the previous lilly system that a complete new addition to the job in SB and wasn't doing anything. There's no denying that without ebing entirely deluded.

If you watch the Yoshida interview with Jesse Cox before Dawntrail one of the questions Cox asked was about a story skip to 6.1 and apparently one does exist in the game that was made but it was down to Yoshida who said no, not to implement it into the Live version of FF14 and he quoted the value of the story in his opinion as being FF14's strongest selling point.

I think RDM is the only one with a gauge spender that is 'interesting' in that you have to manage both of them without one being more than the other.

Most of the other gauge spenders are kind of lame because they are just the one bar that you're inevitably using in the 1/2 mins window.

Like the Glamour removal of restrictions is a very good addition but its far from being actually significant. Sure you can do more unique matches with gear but you still lack dresser and glam plates to fully take advantage of it. I think too little people are devoted to updating the older content (now only focussed on dungeon updating for the trust system).
