the only true salvation is quitting MMOs as a genre. it's not only dead, but also host to some of the worst games ever devised by the greediest pigfuckers in charge of extracting as much playtime and money from addiction-prone NEETs like yourself. cut the dependency loose and play something else

nah there's a place for mmos, especially as people get older. Its a nice, long lasting world to enjoy outside of real life. As gamers get older they either play MMOs or they get into 40k. Its one or the other, in some cases both.

i've found the opposite to be true. when i was a teenager, i was extremely heavy into WoW (this was way back when vanilla was still current). i played all the way through my college years, but found that the older i got, the less good it felt to sacrifice pre-scheduled time to a game. i quit for a long while when i was 32 or so, then picked it back up at 35/36 (always played at a mythic raiding level, not HoF, but still US 200ish on a 2 night schedule, not amazing, but held my own) anda found that WoW just devolved into massively punishing timesinks with no respect for the player. i have a gf i live with, two pets, and a kid on the way, there's zero way commitments like those MMOs like WoW demand are reasonable when you have life going on. i am biased because 1. i think WoW is probably the only good (despite how awful it is) MMO on the market and 2. i don't think they're worth playing unless you're doing shit like raiding the hardest difficulty.

problem with mmos these days is you can get everything they're peddling elsewhere without the "it gets good at level x" bullshit time investment. at the same time, ironically, mmos died when they tried to cater to instant gratification crowd because it turns you actually need time investment for shit you do to actually matter.

Anonymous No.725120974 [Report]

it's true, and maybe i just conditioned myself into thinking that was the only way to play, but i can't imagine playing WoW casually and getting anything out of it. your sense of progression would be stunted, others would be significantly stronger than you, putting you at a huge disadvantage (people love imitating min-max shit they see on streams), and you'd be paying 15/mo / grinding 15/mo worth of gold to run low-level dungeons and pug heroic or first 2-3 mythic at best... i've also experienced the community at both a high-end raiding level and at a ground-floor casual level, both can be extremely cancerous and unhelpful

hence why OSRS is so popular. It is a game that respects your time investment and is fairly simple to get into. No gear treadmill, no resets. You only have 15 minutes to do some Fishing? Cool, that progress will be there forever and is meaningful. No time for re-learn your class after its been updated for the 6th time this expansion? Don't worry, OSRS combat is simple and easy to understand for the most part.

I broke out of WoW a few years ago during the Shadowlands story arc because they changed characters and character motivations in ways that made it obvious that new people had taken over and that the older people who made wow originally were either gone or were fine coasting and just collecting a paycheck.

You can do it too.
After I quit for a specific reason, I then looked back and realized that it wasn't even the best mmo on the market anymore, not to mention best game worthy of being my main game.

Once I was free of WoW, I played elden ring, bg3, and all kinds of fun singleplayer/coop games. I even got back into swtor which I hadn't played in years and was pleasantly surprised it was still getting updates and still had a small but loyal and consistent playerbase who actually like the game. Looking back, I realized that myself and a lot of my WoW friends played it because "It's WoW", but that's not a real reason, it was just complacency. I now play ESO, New World, and swtor as my mmo fix, but I also play a wider variety of singleplayer and coop games as well. Yes I know New World just announced no more updates but the game itself was fun and had a reasonable size playerbase, they're doing that for money reasons.

Whenever I see another WoW addict who knows they're in a bad position since the game sucks now but can't break free I just hope my story of being absolutely happy with quitting gets to them. There are so many games out there, stop wasting your time and money on a game you play just because it's familiar and you have a lot of previous time with it.

None of these things correlate with the game quality.
>loved combat system
So loved the literally just gimped it into the ground. Twice, if you count one-button-rotation that 90% of the playerbase will use and all future changes would have to accommodate for. Thrice, if you count addons ban because all the future encounters would be much more basic because the shit blizzard pulled out for the last few years is barely playable without DBM and WA.

"The" hook was the crazy raiding experience because devs were inbreed retards >>725126368 , i.e. it was the main selling point. Obviously it died.
For actual players? The combat was nice with all the shit you had to dodge, unlike WoW where you need addons to show you places where you can't stand, here it was a baseline, so everything was designed around it. The classes were interesting, not just generic fantasy stereotypes. The races were good, shitload of cool and/or hot designs. The overall look and feel was comfy as heaven, even if the writing leaned into the quirky "so this happened" territory before this kind of writing flooded all the possible media. Also the housing system was (and probably still is) completely unmatched.

>Avoid F2PFreemium garbage, anything Korean that pretty much has pretty characters but garbage everything else, and anything gacha or similar monetized.
Once you have that it depends what you enjoy about MMOs
>Shroud of the Avatar
If you give a shit about the RPG in MMORPG this is for you. Made by Lord British of Ultima Online fame himself. If you don't care about RPG stuff though it will piss you off. It has some neat text-based old school NPC interactions where you type or click on keywords so a guard you don't know is just "A_City_Guard" until you come up, greet them, and ask them "What is your name?" when it then becomes "Guard Thornton" once he tells you his name. Also there are NPCs with entirely hidden keywords you get from playing, and there's also a fuckload of non-instanced player housing and custom dungeons and shit. Even the monetization isn't bad as you earn the premium currency by playing.

>Pantheon Rise of the Fallen
Brad McQuaid, of EverQuest fame was working on this before his untimely death. Its a very EQ inspired game and is coming along nicely but its still not released though those with pledges can play in the alpha/beta. Fun for some of us who used to play EQ without a lot of the stupid of the time.

>Star Citizen
Its easily the most immersive game and ambitious MMO project ever made. Even a slice of the incomplete alpha is more fun than most full priced titles around if its your kind of game. Both space combat, trading, mining, salvaging etc.. and on foot tactical combat is present. If you are one of those who doesn't give a shit if you press E next to the ship/plane and instantly pop into the cockpit instead of there being a realistic button to be pushed that lets down the ramp or ladder and a fully animated climbing into the cockpit, sitting down, and going through the startup sequence, it may not be for you. However for immersion its great; get a cheap key or play during freefly

A LOT of stuff is getting simplified before 2026 in preperation for the new engine, next thursday all we know is all runnable content is getting revamped as well as the combat experience itself. The gear loop is changing to be based on progression for example if you run enough of a dungeon but don't get the right drop you wanted, can use points to get the garunteed drop with premade reforges that used to be near on impossible to obtain soley through playing. Lots of other endgame systems are changing but thats the surface level, I'd reccomend starting a character and see how you feel. It's actully pretty good if you give it a chance

Having more buttons to spam doesn't make a game more interesting or interactive, this is the crux of modern blizzard, every encounter now is a generic tank and spank with groundfire and some kind of extra action button gimmick, core class mechanics have been streamlined across the board to be generic button spam. A frost mage doesn't need 6 different reflavors of frostbolt buttons to push on proc and the only value those buttons have is 'does more damage', they need their baseline frostbolts to actually be useful in the first place, and have other buttons that do different and interesting things

There's no single game that does everything better than other MMOs out there, they all have their unique standout features.
>Wildstar: playfabs which are effectively minigames
>RIFT: huge variety of building blocks and materials, terrain paints, skybox projectors, weather devices and occlusion planes for rain/snow/fog
>ESO: idle markers and pathing system for NPCs, houses as part of fast travel network
>PSO2 classic: display systems for player-made images

PSO2 NGS is genuinely innovative with the scripting system, even if there are some capacity limits. Housing spaces can be used to create miniature walking sim games or platformers with interactive switches, traps and checkpoints. Or you can create scripted situations, like a resident detecting someone entered a room and saying something in response. It can be very tedious to set up everything but some autists make huge exhibits. There's so much demand for a cross-server tour system that the devs acknowledged player requests and are working on it.

I really liked throne and liberty when it came out, but I quit because I'm too much of a gamer dad now to play a MMORPG. Doesn't mean I didn't try, but string how little I got done with 3 hours of nightly playtime max was depressing. MMORPGs usually waste to much of your time to make that feasible and when you're playing with other people it will make you feel bad for dragging other people down.

Now I play dragon's dogma 2 which also wastes my time, but at least it's just me that's running around in the game world. In the other hand I also contemplated playing a classic WoW that allows you to bring bots with you and play with my old pocket healer and best friend

the old republic is power fantasy where motherfuckers eat planets and are literally so angry theyre immortal. its a lot more fun.

Yeah, it's amazing that when you don't have to cater to the lowest form of normalfags and don't have jewsney execs controlling your every step you can SUDDENLY make something half-decent like it's nothing. It just like the problem is not with the franchise itself.

they said they want retail to be closer to classic WoW moving foward, which includes more focus on social features (IE housing and that new big inn or whatever its called) and reducing combat complexity. I think its a great thing.

>closer to classic WoW ... reducing combat complexity
It's good they "want" retail to be closer to "good game name", but so far they clearly have zero understanding of what made it good. Combat in vanilla was less complex not because the players had less abilities.

Dead doesn't mean its bad. Why the fuck did you even put everquest on D if its deader than more than half of D tier?
Also WoW is the antithesis of MMO's and introduced everything wrong with the mmorpg industry nowadays.

I don't really understand why MMOs became overwhelmed by solo gamers to the extent there's no expectation for you to mostly play as a party any more.

If you're not playing for the purpose of playing with other people, why are you playing a multiplayer game?
Anonymous No.725147245 [Report]

Because they offer other things as well?
What are single-player RPGs that have insane shitloads of content to grind through, big "alive" world, multiple classes with different abilities and gear and whatsoever, and if the game is alive than even content updates, so you have even more shit to strive for? Only diablo-like ARPGs come close, and it's basically the same thing except not MMO, but not only they never have as much content, but there's approximately zero (0) decent, let alone good diablo clones on the market.

its quite simple, people like the option of playing with other people in an open world where you can physically see other players, but not be forced to interact with them. It mostly boils down to the MMO playerbase (30+) getting older and its hard to get people who have a family, job, etc... all to get online at the same time and play together. I don't really think its a bad thing for MMOs to start offering more solo stuff.

>removed healing well, a completely unique mechanic that requires other players to do something to get healed
>removed shadow fiend, the only mana regen mechanic that has a long cooldown and can't be just spammed on cooldown
If the picture is true, holy priests will have a single button, "Heal", and that's it.

Idk why people like runescape so much. I've put about 100 hours into it recently after not playing it for 20 years and it sucks. In this 100 hours I've done nothing but shitty quests that take ages to do since they send you back and forth across the entire map. Even after unlocking a bunch of teleports and agility levels it still sucks. I haven't seen a single person talk in chat once. It's just a bunch of people running around solo to their next grind or shitty quest. Now it just sits AFK on one of my monitors as I wack a fucking crab for 2,000 hours just so I can wield some stupid weapon so I can progress Slayer faster by killing the same enemy 80 something times. I think I'm over it at this point, absolutely nothing feels rewarding to do. I have 24 days left on my membership and I just don't give a shit anymore. I might try out the sailing bit but theres no way its going to make this stupid game any better.

I play LotRO and DDO. LotRO if I want to play old WoW with a much more pleasing world, and DDO because there's nothing else quite like it out there for weird-ass D&D action. Also because they're free to play and have given away large amounts of the games so I can play without paying anything which is good because I might only play a few hours a month when the mood strikes me. It's a shame I have to play them solo since I don't know anyone else who wants to play them because especially in DDO's case there are big advantages to playing together but I'm not playing with randos and that is that

I don't know about Wildstar's situation specifically but usually when the emulators take forever it's because they don't have the server side information necessary to rebuild the game. A lot of it can be gathered while a game is live but if it hasn't been done by the time it gets shut down it complicates the creation of the server emulator. When that information is missing devs basically have to make it up. Which means that even if it gets to a playable state it won't be the same.

That's a problem with most MMORPGs that you can't play them casually as you get punished severely if you fall behind. I think when there's a less of a focus on endgame it works better but nobody's making games like that anymore.

Blizzard figured out how to sell the idea of the MMORPG to people who don't want to play MMORPGs. Then to keep those people playing they changed the game to suit them. That's the TLDR of how the genre died.
