Why isn't anyone making early 00s style games? It feels like there's nothing filling the gap between 2D pixel games and the modern UE asset store stuff.

I think because a lot of those had proprietary software, so there's no way to access the game engines that made those games to begin with

Yes but there's tons available, it's just not an appealing style

I've been thinking of doing a morrowind TC once openMW finishes development. Which'll probably be never.

Nostalgia cycle is currently at the ps1, very early ps2 era. In a few years i think we will start seeing more of this

It is though. It's the perfect sweet spot for "realism" where things look like the things they're supposed to be but with nice visual clarity instead of the visual clutter and muddiness of more modern games.

Turns out those were actually the peak of videogames and are hard to make because they take actual effort to make

I was just thinking about this the other day and how difficult it is going to be to remake KOTOR without losing the soul of the game entirely.

Because modern gamers don't want this kind of slower D&D diceroll gameplay where you're not even shooting the guns or swinging the lightsaber, they want to do that themselves in first person.

I think that's why you have seen all the delays with that remake, I don't think they have a solid direction to remake the game in a way that can hold true to the original while appeasing a modern audience. It's just not going to work, you either remake it 1:1 with the same diceroll combat and it will be dated as fuck, or you make it a modern ARPG and most of the people that wanted to play this won't.

desu, the writing in KOTOR is pretty amateurish at times as well, especially compared to KOTOR2. Some of the dialogue is pretty bad.

Because thats also when games went from 5-10 man teams to 50-100. It's not viable for indies to do and publishers wont fund it.

This is the exact issue. Or one of many, let's face it.
I'm a huge D20 apologist and it annoys me when people say "KotOR was a great game, just update it to play like Jedi Survivor". And I can't help but think that you don't think it's a great game then, because you want it to be a totally different game. It can definitely be expanded, even TSL expanded things, like saber and force forms, and it worked great. So there's definitely room for changes that can be made, but wanting to simply abandon it as some outdated or obsolete gameplay is frustrating to hear.

Delaying will only make it worse as the budget bloats and investor expectations go up. They should've made it close to the original with some UI reworks and graphical updates and called it a day. Now it's at the point where it's gonna be a flop no matter what they do because it's taken too long.

I don't know. Baldur's Gate 3 did really well. I think that sort of combat system would convert really well to KOTOR.

True, but who can trust the devs to even make anything close to BG3 quality with all the troubles they've been through. I mean the game was basically cancelled multiple times already. I'll be shocked if it ever comes out with how little we know about it after literally years.

nigga these games were the golden age
they haven't made the theoretical optimum of all the formulas bereft of shiny grafixxx and microtransactions but you can play SWBF 20fckyourface if you want that horseshit with less effort on raw gameplay.
Otherwise look on indie/mod scene and fine that og SWBF II mod with all the space shit

Games like turbo overkill or moros protocol? There are tons of these.

I'm not sure it takes a lot of skill to copy paste someone's combat system. Update the graphics throw in a knock off Baldurs Gate 3 or Dragon Age Origins style turn based combat system and it would sell like hotcakes.

KOTOR 2 would benefit from a remake even more since its let down by its rushed shit tier ending.

what the fuck are you saying, kotor was one of the worst things to ever happen to video games. you can literally press the attack button 5 times and go make and sandwich and thats enough to kill any boss in the game. and not only that but it was absolutely fudgin hideous and ripped a bunch of stuff from skies of arcadia.

holy hell

ENOUGH

The combat in KotOR isn't particularly good either. You could very easily make better RTWP combat (as much as I like the game it is heavily hamstrung by being an xbox game first), but trying to shove it into a remake of KotOR would be pointless when you could just make a good new game instead. Remakes are pointless in general.

all star wars games were utter slop except rogue squadron which was just okay for a rental from blockbuster and its doubly ironic that rpg retards idolize this era because its when crpgs were doing so poorly that jrpgs were considered respectable by comparison. and this doesn't even mean jrpgs were good, it means everything was grim console shit. but regardless tons of modern games in the style of this era

Indie devs keep making that primitive slop. It's so tiresome.

there are a lot of late 90s/early 00s 3d indies lately. lunacid, dread delusion, mohrta. 3d is inherently more difficult than 2d.

This is also a part of the problem but as AI becomes better it might become viable for indies to generate good looking 3d models/assets to use in the game which might bring the indie team size down to a more reasonable 20-30 people.

>some guy in his basement can make an ultra HD body model with extra labia and asshole wrinkle detail to make blender porn with, but couldn't possibly make a much lower poly body model to use in a video game
