Not really. I think for the most part, Ubisoft had done a lot to shore up their game launcher, and GOG Galaxy does really well despite, you know, being mostly DRM-Free. The only ones really shooting themselves in the foot right now are Epic and EA, but I'd honestly go as far as to give some credit to Epic for allowing people to use open source alternatives with token login instead of their actual launcher. The day that Valve allows SteamCMD to actually properly launch games and run the overlay in the same way Legendary does is the day I never use the full Steam client ever again.

Add GOG next to steam staring at the guy too. They're smaller but people like and respect them for avoiding drm
While Valve is still the best there is, it has it's problems too. It's hard to forget how they pretty much normalized the gambling loot box shit and how they neglected TF2 for so many years. Hell, removing bots was the bare minimum and they still got praised for that shit even though it had been a problem for years. They still aren't fully gone either. Worst part is Steam support and Valve forcing game devs to censor their games and if they still find something "problematic", they are forever denied and you will NEVER be able to get your game on Steam ever again. It's final. That's it. You also have to pay like 100$ fee when submitting your game. The way threat Japanese devs is the worst.

Asking for a launcher that actually works should be step 1 before you even think about giving free games. The time it takes to boot up that trash isn't even worth the free game.

It’s literally just steam being better. It was built from the ground up to be convenient and to provide a service (easy game market, social connectivity, etc), and it does that. Other services don’t try to compete where it matters and try to browbeat you onto the platform by demanding exclusivity, that’s why they fail.

the problem with Steam is that, from their competitor's perspective, they're leaving a ton of money on the table, which makes it seem like they're engaging in noncompetitive market practices. That is exactly why it is stupid though. A cart has been proven to encourage people to over spend because they look at the total in the cart and think it is under whatever they were originally looking to spend, and thus add something else in which might only just put them over. Per transaction it may not amount much individually, but in the long run and in volume it adds up quickly.

There isn't really any part of that which is difficult in a technical sense. Might be some licensing or service amendments required depending on what those feature do or offer though, really depends on what is currently baked into their agreements with Devs/Pubs. But as long as they had some competent software developers available it is something that could be rolled out pretty quickly. Even if it meant some new back end database or user identification stuff needing to be built that still isn't really a difficult thing.

It is crazy. Amazon actually has the physical infrastructure and resources to build its own platform to compete with Steam if it really wanted to. Especially with its crazy purchasing power behind it. Hell it could probably snipe GoG's market share by making its own in-house physical distribution system the could sell you a physical copy of games on its service. It has all the resources and money to do that sort of shit if it had someone competent heading up the platform. But no instead it just likes to throw money in a pile and burn it. Which to be fair would have been a preferable alternative what it is doing with LotR and others.

Valve invested in PC gaming while everyone else was abandoning it. When they turned around and came back to PC, did they change their tune? No, they were even more arrogant and dickish then ever. Steam never cheated and no one defends them. Other storefronts chase people into the walls, arm them, the coach them to defend Steam's wall. That shit is on other storefronts. Apart from a handful of storefronts like Gog, no one tries to be more customer friendly. They try to currate harder, they say they're going to ban 'filth' from the platform, they forcibly monopolize games through PC exclusivity. They spend shitloads on storefronts that are inferior to the unchallenged monopoly.

A barebones store with no features that will steal all your games the instant you say a bad word on their forums is more anti-customer than a store that has dozens of extremely useful features, allows you to switch away from an anti-customer OS like windows, and has no threat of stealing all your games.
>steam saved pc gaming
Steam killed PC gaming though. It was flourishing before those guys got involved. The only reason there was even a modding scene in valve games were because valve relied almost completely on modders to make their games so it would be silly to be hostile towards them. They stopped giving shit about muh modders once steam got big enough to carry them which was more than a decade ago.

Honestly? It really doesn't. Valve is a private company, run by people who genuinely care for the customer experience (whether that's out of the goodness of their hearts or because it's profitable is irrelevant, what matters is the end result). A company like that having a monopoly is by far the best market situation possible for the customers. All their games are in one spot and Valve is able to tardwrangle other companies into treating their customers well too. If Valve had any serious competitors, the market would be split, they'd have less power, and other companies would treat the customers like shit, even on Steam.

There are 2 valid competitors, they are just not trying to be steam and focus on minor market segments. Did somebody really expect someone will try to be on par with steam features when steam has decades of development? That would be like making an alternative to Windows/Linux - too late for that.

Really? What has Valve been doing the past 2 decades? I recall they've been constantly improving Steam so it gives the customers a better experience, made Linux viable so you can get away from an actual anti-customer platform; windows, given you free server space for cloud saves and allowed you to play online for free, both of which cost a subscription on consoles, and dozens of other things.
>inb4 muh paid mods muh lootboxes
Valve tried paid mods, noticed people didn't like it, apologized and never tried it again. Bethesda is still doing them.
Valve didn't invent lootboxes. Maplestory had them years before. Plus, Valves implementation is the best for customers because you can sell unwanted items.
Name one gaming company that's even remotely as pro-customer as Valve.

letting CS players combine shittier skins into better ones and even knives
and adding a trade back feature to their system so that if someone has second thoughts or gets scammed they can reverse the trade instantly and both people get their items back
as a bonus, both of these pro-customer moves heavily fuck over the third-party gambling shits

Yeah I remember reading that. But a lot of it was they didn't really try to approach it in any sensible manner. Like it was acknowledged it would be hard to lure people over to them, and then tried nothing about it. It is a very valid issue for any company that wants to enter the same market, but they invariably always fall short of even reaching parity with Steam before even considering or tackling the prospect of offering something Steam doesn't to win customers over. You either have to offer a better product, or an alternative product. And these companies offer neither.

I was laughing on the epic games store launch. PC players already have vested interest in Steam. Not to say the twenty years of distribution, community market, workshop, and social network that was built. That's a lot of goodwill that needs to be competed against. Which, at steam's current directory, is a monolith to overcome.

>>725174907
They arguably do qualify for it in many respects. It is THE go to platform for PC to release your games on. Even when not the sole platform you release on. EGS makes no sales because the platform is dogshit, itch does get some sales but it largely because of hipsters wanting to counter-culture instead of buying on Steam and the major games still generally release on Steam anyway, and despite the service GOG offers they still aren't a real fraction of the sales compared to Steam. There is nothing preventing a company with enough capital and technical knowledge from competing with Steam, but until that happens Steam is still the primary release platform for PC if you want real potential for sales. It is a natural monopoly, but as I said that shouldn't be confused with the sort of monopoly that it is being called by these paid EGS shills.

No, Steam a market leader, not a monopoly. The most successful games of all time use their own launchers instead of Steam. Plenty of competition exists and Steam takes zero actions to prevent others from using it. The broad definition of monopoly you're using renders the term meaningless. Don't care, still not installing that stupid launcher.
You dont own your account legally. Everything in it, including all your licenses which is your ability to download you don't have a right to keep forever.
You pay a one time subscription fee to download games for as long as they let you have your account but make no mistake you do NOT own the right to keep that downloaded that game. You only have the right to keep those files as long as steam allows you to keep your account.
Once those licenses get revoked, if your steam account gets banned or they just decide to remove your account for whatever reason, now those files on your PC are copyright infringement legally.
You only own it "legally" as long as steam says you do and they deal with the license side.
You have no rights, it's their platform and your account is in the ownership and control of steam to do whatever they want with it, not yours. They decide what happens to your account, not you.
So if buying is never owning, then piracy isn't stealing because you cant steal something that you cant own.
That's like saying its theft if I took a patented seed from an apple at the store, planted it with my own supplies(copied) and ate/sold it. Its not theft because you didn't steal the original property. Likewise you can't steal infinitely copied files just like planting a seed and copying it from growing isn't stealing. DMCA will argue differently but no one follows it because its not morally or legally just to follow it.
Just like how it is not morally right to buy from steam, because they are not selling you any product that has original property, and therefore it can't be stolen. Copying files can never be stealing.

Yes, I'm not shitting on steam or saying it's not worth using.
But it's not perfect, it definitionally can't be if they are still improving it. You don't know what you are missing, in that had there been better competition, maybe the improvements steam will make over the next year would be done over the next 3 months.
If you look at their news releases

the by far most prominent topic is the steam deck, which coincidentally is facing better competition than steam

A monopoly have nothing to do with governments, it's just being the sole supplier in a market.
The guy who bought all the turnips(?) in the US was a monopoly (within the US) for a while since the only person you could buy turnips from was him, the US government had nothing to do it with it, he just threw money at everyone to get the entire supply.

A monopoly is just being the sole supplier, but yes, obviously this isn't something you keep if you aren't actively trying to keep it, because competition will rise to get a share of the market. To stay a monopoly, you have to aggressively take them out through various hostile and predatory practices, and prevent them from even existing in the first time.

For all of human history its been agreed upon that if you buy a product thats unique and physical that someone says you can keep then its implied you at the very least have a right to own it and do what you want with it for own person use, and thats how growing food has always been.

yea, you didn't ask for that
If valve would get broken up it wouldn't be to create two valves that do the same things, but done across verticals, probably with one side being Steam the other Valve's first party games + marketplace (cs:go and dota 2 are still two biggest titles on steam) with a commitment from the second to actually sell on other stores. Everything else can go to either one.
But the main thing would be axing the "no lower prices than on steam rule" by restricting it only to apply to steam licenses, because right now, even if a new store matches steam's feature development speed they will forever be behind, even if they double it they still would need over a decade to reach parity. The other major way to "reinvest" is to just lower your prices, but they can't do that because no developer will leave steam to sell to a smaller audience for the same after the cut price.

They copied the designs and then took them back to America. Americans rebels copied the brown bess design from the British and it became literally the standard issue musket for most soldiers. Also the famous Slater Mill in Rhode Island is a copied design from the british.

That depends, are you another Edward Snowden, FPSrussia or another person that the US government has a hate boner for because you exposed their kikery and hypocrisy.
Exposing how undemocratic and detatched the government is they are from what WE THE PEOPLE actually want legal is what they hate the most. So they'll do anything to entrap you.
They'll persecute and prosecute one single person or business while ignoring normal people because its not about justice its about malicious corrupt power.
Cannabis is a modern example of how unpopular the US government is. States are making their own law separate from they feds, the people, yet they still cherry pick which laws they want to enforce instead of getting with the program and doing what the people want.

That interview with the Amazon gaming VP is hilarious.
>"At Amazon, we assumed that size and visibility would be enough to attract customers, but we underestimated the power of existing user habits. We never validated our core assumptions before investing heavily in solutions. The truth is that gamers already had the solution to their problems, and they weren't going to switch platforms just because a new one was available."
>"The mistake was that we underestimated what made consumers use Steam. It was a store, a social network, a library, and a trophy case all in one. And it worked well."
They really have no idea what they're doing. All of this should be painfully obvious to anyone that has the slightest interest in gaming. And there's the suggestion here is that the idea that something "working well" would have people want to use it comes as a surprise to Amazon.

It makes perfect sense when you understand how corporate ideas happen. Some retarded boomer in management who is completely disconnected from the real world hears or reads about some thing that takes their fancy or is making money. They then do zero research and tell the management under them to start making a copy of the thing or doing the thing. But they don't actually copy it as that would cost real money, instead they waste time and resources having them build a crude simulacrum that is barely anything like the original even in name or intent. At that point it becomes a case of whether they manage to get something shat out, stall production and double down to burn more money just to shit something out, or they get bored after wasting so much time and money it just gets scrapped entirely. At no point in the endeavour do they ever actually get people who know about the thing, and instead just validate the idea with sycophant yes men that agree with their boss to keep their job. This happens in every corporation, and only gets worse the bigger it is or the more money it has.

Linux users aren't a hivemind. Some people are freetards who won't let anything proprietary near their computer, some are more reasonable and only use proprietary software if there isn't a free equivalent, while some use it because it's a better, smoother experience than windows and gives you more power over your computer. I mostly fall into the latter 2 groups. I use Linux because it's better than windows, and I use Steam because it's a better experience than piracy.

I can, and I do occasionally. Do you think I could survive on Linux if I couldn't move some files? I just don't typically because Steam is just better.

Maybe, but I don't need photoslop of office, so Linux gives me a better desktop experience. And software compatibility will change. Linux is only growing, and eventually adobe and even microsoft will have to put their shit on Linux or lose out on a significant part of their userbase.

Nope. Linux is great, as is Valve for making it viable.
