Turn-Based Combat
/v/, I'm itching for some good turn-based combat.
I'm on my third playthrough of Pathfinder: WotR now just because I can't find any other game that scratch that same itch, Slay the Spire and Monster Train works as a quick fix but I've played them to death as well.

Gimme some recommendations please.

XCOM:Enemy Unknown/Enemy Within. Some people like XCOM 2, but I don't like all the timers everywhere. I'd also recommend Battletech 2018, which has both a campaign mode and a career mode, and a lot of variability to both with how you either have to buy or salvage the mechs and equipment for them. Pilots are at first very expendable before they become incredibly deadly monsters that can insta head chop enemies from half the map away or do repeat knock downs and leg removals. Fun game, still to this day has a memory leak because the devs are mildly retarded. Also has a lot of mods if you want even more customization.

I enjoy turn-based combat in general, but I do really love the build tism of Pathfinder, though that is not limited to Turn-Based games, its why I like stuff like PoE too.

I would recommend against AoW4. Not because it's bad, but because Triumph got hit hard with the Paradox curse of too much fucking DLC. The base game is still fine on its own, but there are now something like 13 different expansions to the game, and the cheapest are 10 bucks with others costing as much as the base game itself. You want it all? That's 120+ additional greenbacks for a game that starts at $50. In a few more years it might end up as fantasy Stellaris. I don't even like Stellaris and that shits ridiculous.

BG3 is fine, but it lacks a lot of depth. The interactivity if fun, but Divinity Original Sin 2 did that just as well with better combat.

XCOM is great
>Silent Storm
Great game from what I remember
>Age of Wonders, all of em
2 was great, 3 was very different but fun, tried 4 for a bit and it was alright
>Troubleshooter
Never heard of it, looks interesting, not my aesthetic but I should maybe give it a chance
>Jagged Alliance 2
Vague recollection of playing this back in the day, is 3 worth it?
>Valkyria Chronicles games
Played the first one, it was pretty fun for what it was.
>Into the Breach
Fun little puzzle game, but didn't spend too much time on it.
>Metal Slug Tactics
I've heard good things, I should probably check it out
>Invisible Inc
I remember playing it around when it came out, neat but not really my thing.
>Battletech
I'm going to have to play this for sure, looks great
>Warhammer 40k Mechanicus
I liked this for a bit, but I dropped it for some reason after a while
>Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters
I think I confused this with 40K Inquisitor, which is not a good game, should probably look into
>Steamworld Heist
Fun game from what I remember.
>Shining Force games
>Advance Wars games

2 is amazing modded, 3 is amazing period, and it's important for you to know that there were no Jagged Alliance games released between 2 and 3. If you live in a timeline where people claim, or you find games purporting to be Jagged Alliance games released in that period, ignore them and continue playing JA2/JA3.

Yeah AoW4 is at the "pirate it now, buy a complete pack later" price point.

I'm not not typically and advocate of piracy, you should support good devs, good games, but at a certain point it's just fucking ridiculous. What's even more disgusting is a lot of these devs with insane amounts of DLC are now starting to shift to "subscription" models to get access to the DLC on a monthly basis.

Support good games, good devs, but don't support shit DLC practices. Buy ten good different games, not one game and nine overpriced DLC's.

For the King.

I prefer the first game not the sequel. The sequel added movement mechanics to the playfield and it just didn't mesh well for me, but the first game was super clean. Little more board game feeling with the hex map but for turn based combat the system is really polished I think. There's a dungeon mode where you just kind of do fight after fight that really tests how well you know the game.

Fanmade patch that eventually got sold on Steam and GoG. It ports the game to Windows, adds mod support, and does a ton of bugfixing, rebalancing and AI improvements. Some people don't like the changes so I wouldn't say it renders the original obsolete, but it's definitely worth checking out. You can download it for free:
