a publisher can't come into your home and force you to give up your physical game disk
they can revoke your game key on steam though

It's true.
If you buy them on Steam you don't actually own your games, you're just renting, at best.

Thanks to the Steam Marketplace and inventory I have $40,000 in DotA2 and TF2 items. I got a Steam Deck for free and I haven't bought a game using real money in 10 years.
I don't give a FUCK about ownership.

What's is the ideal gaming device or console for me, someone who hates PC gaming, hates Steam, hates Valve, hates Gabe Newell, hates half life, and wants the most anti-PC gaming device of all?

I want a gaming console or device that gives me the image of someone who hates Steam, hates Gabe Newell, and hates PC gaming in general.

Thank god, but unfortunately they still took away the license for my physical PS4 copy of The Crew.

I've been using Steam since 2013 and I have never had a game removed from my account.

If you're too retarded to follow basic conditions then that's a (you) problem.

So I'm not supposed to copy my DOOM.WAD out of the Steam folder, uninstall the rest of the files, and use GZDoom.to play it? Oh well; I already did and they can't stop me.
>b-but the license!!!
I don't care. It won't be enforced for the same reason that Nintendo isn't coming into my house to make sure I have receipts for my NES cartridges. A digital game is just as permanently mine as a physical one unless there is actual DRM that enforces the publisher's arbitrary rules, and for many Steam games there is not. All they can do is keep me from downloading it again, and I downloaded it already.

if a console manufacturer didn't want you to play their games after a specific period of time, they could release a firmware update that prevents your disc from being read.
>ok but there are ways around that
yeah well there are ways around DRM too so what's your point?

If the law allows for that then companies are going to do it. You have to change the law

it's easy to be cocky now but I guarantee in a few decades if and when Steam becomes unrecognizable from what it is now, and you lose access to the games you spent lots of money on, you wont be so assholey about it.

False equivalency, and a shit comparison. Cars are a tangible asset. Game licenses are just an entitlement to consume a piece of entertainment until the publisher decides to revoke your access to said product.

You really think this is a gotcha? For this argument to work, you literally need to ignore all of the game cartridges and discs for literally every single console that has ever existed. Fucking retard.
Anonymous No.725252609 [Report] >>725253102
>>725251972
>You really think this is a gotcha?
Yep, and you fell for it. You even doubled down on the retardation that you can own an intangible property. A game is not the physical media it's stored in, and owning the storage doesn't mean you own the IP in it.
That's like saying that if you have an entire book memorized in your head, you own that story.
Cheers.
Anonymous No.725253102 [Report] >>725253749 >>725253771
>>725252609
You're confusing IP ownership with product ownership. No one said buying a game means you own the intellectual property, just like buying a book doesn't mean you own the copyright.

When you buy a physical game you own a licensed copy of the product, and I can use that product indefinitely. When people buy a product, they expect to be able to use it indefinitely, and Steam and other digital storefronts inherently don't give you that right, unlike buying a physical cartridge or disc, you absolute fucking nonce.

Consoles arent any different. You have a license to play the game disc, and most discs cant even play without updates.

I generally agree with you, but I've given up in the hell that is modernity and just moved to PC. Honestly, most of my physical games are bloat as flash carts, ODEs, mod chips and soft mods are just so easy with everything from 7th gen and back. On PS5, I just accept that the thing is disposable. On PC, I just pirate every single player game I actually enjoyed, even if I bought it so I don't have to dick around with DRM.
Anonymous No.725253771 [Report]
>>725253102
That's not really true. A company can, at any time, demand that you return their physical copy and/or demand that you destroy it, without a refund. It was just hard to enforce, but it was legal.

I think that's the Switch 2 for sure. Nintendo hates Valve because they are both competing in the handheld sector and Steam Deck is used to emulated Nintendo games. Meanwhile Valve hates Nintendo because they were forced to remove Dolphin off their platform which goes against Gabe's free market philosophy but he wanted to avoid a lawsuit.

Snoyggers lose so hard every single anti nintendo thread they make so they pivoted to try to smear steam, little do they know their "discs" are just licenses to play their games too.

A sound theory, but aren't Nintendo fans equally liable? Despite their claims of being idorts, they're the first to throw PC users under the bus because of their hatred of emulators. They also love calling us "PC vegans".
Anonymous No.725254336 [Report]
If you're talking from the perspective of a windowscuck or a consolecuck you have no right to cry about owning your games
Even then steam doesn't give a shit about cracking your games to keep them forever
