A and D is how you move in the air.
By pressing either A or D, and turning your view in the same direction you will move in the air, the speed of this turn depending on your speed. Do it until you get a feel for it.
This applies not only to your own blast jumping but also to surfing off enemy explosions. If you learn how to do it you might be able to escape situations that would have been a death otherwise.

All I can say is holding forward makes the engine recognize you want to influence your movement forward and will trigger the speed it thinks air strafing naturally would be, but you don't want natural airstrafe speed you want rocketjump speed, so you have to fool it with movement in other directions.

holding different keys besides a/d changes the required view angle/direction to turn your mouse. using w/d lets you sideways bhop for example. in quakeworld, people use w-strafing to dodge rockets in midair while keeping their view on the opponent and also use w+a/w+d strafing to airstrafe around a corner to have a better view around the corner. even high-level soldiers use w-strafing to dodge rockets while looking at opponents.

yes, the mechanics of rocket jumping are fundamentally just a byproduct of explosive knockback by measuring the distance between the explosion and the center of your collision hull.
"crouch jumping" can refer to 2 entirely different things though.
>crouch then jump
technically you cannot jump while crouching, but if you time it right you can do it during the crouching animation itself since it's not instant. This has been referred to as c-tapping, it will bring the center of your hitbox closer to the ground before the explosion and will both yield higher jumps and higher damage.

crouching in midair pulls your legs up, which winds up reducing the amount of damage you'll end up taking from the explosion. but it's paired with the momentum from your jump and is often sufficient for most rocket jumping needs

it absolutely is, and was viable to do even when you only had the wrangler itself to work with. It's significantly easier to do with the Eureka Effect and Rescue Ranger.
The biggest problem is the amount of setup required, as a good enemy team will not allow you to hold that position for long if you give them plenty of time to push because you're too busy jerking off at spawn like most lazy engineers play.

You know I actually dunno why holding forward is bad.

My understanding of air-strafing (what people are really talking about here) is that any movement input less than 90 degrees from the direction you're currently going is ignored (basically stopping you from being able to increase your speed mid-air) but by turning in the air you can turn your movement input to be outside the 90 degree dead-zone and by doing so start moving to the side in a manner that feels like you're steering yourself.

To that end it shouldn't matter if you're holding forward or not. It just means you would need to turn more than normal.

You have to calculate your trajectory, do it without your enemy noticing you, and make sure you time it right just to deal less damage than a backstab that is also more forgiving, can be done inside buildings, and can be done multiple times in a few seconds.

Rocket jumping was always intended. Explosions propeling you and exploiting that to get to higher places or crossing bigger chasms was a simple thing to predict. The very exact mechanics, inputs needed, and intricacies for advanced jumping of course weren't "intended" because none of the developers didn't have a five thousand hours to figure out all the consequences of their physics systems when they had other things to worry about.

Because tf2 is a slower paced game than quake and they didnt want rocket jumping to be too good so they added a slight movement nerf, quake, w+a/d keeps you accelerating through the air. Same reason they took out bhops.

Have to agree ctap's are too powerful for how difficult they are to pull off without a script. Just adjust soldier's weight so it's possible to reach the same distance with a standard crouch jump and fix the bug.

There is no class weight or anything besides heavy have natural 50% knockback resistance.

Air strafe speed is determined by natural movespeed, hence why scout get flung around easy. Similarly, explosive knockback is determined by damage, both soldier and demoman have natural 60% resistance for explosive jump, you can disable that with cvar, and you less gain more height/speed thanks to that.
