my idiot impressions so far as someone who played a fuckton of Kirby Air Ride on Gamecube, rated under the assumption that Stadiums will not always be freely chosen in the full game.

Rick is obviously good right now and still will be great for a variety of events, but I think Gooey/Knuckle Joe are better "all around" characters. Most characters have a decent niche/good unique ability to make use of, except Cappy. Cappy just seems ass.

Oval Race is lowkey really good for gliders that got enough Top Speed and can just stay airborne for a whole lap to easily hug the inside of the turn and avoid being drafted.

Bulk Star is actually usable now - from what I've seen using it a bit it has a top speed cap now, but maintaining Charge is now pretty easy rather than a pain.
When you hop on it in City Trial it also automatically gets a full charge so you aren't stuck waiting.

Bulk got buffed dramatically to the point I think it's one of the best vehicles, Scooter feels better as well, it somehow turns even sharper and they made it faster. All the flying machines and bike feel a bit worse, wagon and turbo feel a bit better, rex feels obsoleted by battle chariot.

It seems to me there's only 3 ways of winning: Building for speed, building for flight and building for offense. Sometimes you can get a mix of speed and offense or speed and flight. Of course, you could also just say fuck it and try to be as greedy as possible so all 3 outcomes are accounted for. I'm assuming the online in the final release will be similar, just 16 man lobbies under 5 minutes with 4 stadiums to choose. The rulesets will for sure be different in personal Paddock lobbies, I wonder which one /v/ will settle for.

Honestly my favorite addition for the sole fact that it introduces a genuinely interesting dynamic to City Trial where it's far and away the weakest machine in the game but it's crazy air-time and mobility allow you to traverse to the far off islands really early on and nab a fuckton of stat upgrades. It's a really neat high-risk high-reward machine that makes building for flight machines really fun so far.

There's one island really far off the map that you practically need a flight machine for. I generally go to the volcano first, dive into the volcano itself where it warps you to a weird dimension, then exiting out of the dimension through the middle pillar of light shoots you up pretty high, and then you can use your flight machine to reach the closest floating island. It's easier to see the farthest island off the map from that vantage point.

You are severely overrating Meta Knight for... Whatever fucking reason. His stat spread is simply atrocious. That's the end of the story. That base Top Speed is going to hurt him in the long run.

You're operating under the assumption that he will have a perfect rollout every game and load up on Top Speed, but that's simply not a pragmatic way of looking at it. The fact of the matter is that other characters can do what he can accomplish better.

Having a proximity attack also isn't the boon you think it is. It, what... Speeds up your box breaking by like a fraction of a second? Quick Spins can demolish them just fine in this game compared to the original Air Ride.

And lastly, his special isn't that good. You are limited to 3 full Drill Rush attacks before it runs out, and his speed during the special is outclassed by Rick, who can simply just bowl over you without any extra input or course correcting. The Drill Rush rushes you forward but it requires aim. The braindead option will always win out.

He's clearly still haunted by Brawl Meta Knight; he hasn't been good in any further Smash entries since then, and he's not good here either. Theory: Kirby's Dream Buffet was a tech demo prototype to get online functionality tested for Air Riders. In that case I think they may have buffed bulk’s speed in general because in air riders it feels like it has the best speed bar none, and while in theory it accelerates slowly the speed you get from trailing people means it can reach a good speed insanely fast

Another speed thing I noticed is that scooter is considerably faster in this game, keeping pace with the wing star. All the flying machines (wing,shadow,jet,paper) feel like they have near the same ground speed which feels like a small nerf for wing since it used to be faster on the ground.

I didn’t get to test it in the air much so I can’t say. It still rockets forward after going in the air so it has that at least (as does chariot which feels similar to scooter). I wouldn’t be surprised if the jump height got nerfed to make up for the fact it’s way faster and it feels like it’s even easier to turn with. As someone who loved scooter in air ride it feels really good here, especially since it’s easier to lose control of your vehicle here and there seem to be a surprising amount of stadiums where turn is handy to have (button,gourmet)

You know how bulk star takes awhile accelerating to top speed to it probably wouldn’t seem good for a drag race? Nonissue now with it just being able to ride people’s trails at the start and then speed off.
I image that every vehicle will gain a different amount of speed when slipstreaming (I remember in the first game the jet star got a really big burst of speed from it) so how good it is is probably vehicle dependent and will be stronger on city trial due to stats. I’m interested in how it effects air ride, I’m not sure if this was a thing in the original but it seems like here your vehicle gets a small flat speed increase if you’re too far behind (like really far) so while sandbagging probably won’t be a thing (thank god) there seem to be systems to not make things too lopsided
