I dont understand why this entire board hates detail. If the devs had modern technology when they first originally made the game it would look like the bottom. Technological restrictions held them back and this places close-minded tendency to cling to chiIdhood nostalgia also holds it back.

less detail is better sometimes.

too much detail can over complicate design making stuff less memorable
Anonymous No.725375298 [Report]
>primary purpose: clearly depict important stuff such as where you are, where you can go, enemies, and key objects
>secondary purpose: look good

>Maximalism is good, goy! Make sure to subscribe to as many streaming services as possible and have all the state of the art technology!

>What, you don't enjoy being hyperstimulated every second of the day and never being able to enjoy simplicity for its own sake? Well, that's okay, because we're just going to enshittify everything you love and sell it back to you at a premium!

>It's better this way, goy. You LOVE ultrawide support and HDR. You CAN'T WAIT to see how much detail is packed into every pixel. The past is the past, don't you understand? Sometimes, less is NOT actually more.

>nostalgia
No. The reason is because games do not replicate how the eyeball works with focusing. So when you add all this detail it literally turns to visual noise and you can't make out what you're supposed to be paying attention to. It's really that simple.

The only time adding detail works is when it's in VR because you are in control of your eyeballs. And not a camera.

Design > noise.

The mountain peaks absolutely beautiful in the top pic. Like something out of cartoon, dream, or a fairy tale. Reminds me of candy.

The bottom is just real cliffs with fake plastic trees glued here and there.

Because the top an ethereal dreamlike world made with care and the bottom is a Fortnite aesthetic, bastardization of the very thing its poorly attempting to minic made by incompetent fucks and browns.

>Fortnite aesthetic
This is the main problem with it. It looks like a place I've already been, it looks exactly how I'd expect a Fortnite crossover to look.

Everybody is using the same styles, realistic, the same cartoon Zelda style or Fortnite. I've seen it, I've got bored of it. It's not impressive anymore, especially since I can create the exact same style in UE5 with free assets. There's no "wow look at the graphics upgrades, I wonder how they upgraded gameplay", it's "this is an unreal engine game, I've seen a similar scene hundreds of times over."

The human brain is much better and more easily steered when working mainly with suggested detail.
But using simple details also means that every detail can be deliberate.
Compare the original, where even the guy composing the music was doing so by playing the game and coming up with vibes, to the current, which was so starved for time that the work was split between 5 studios and the original studio mostly worked on irrelevant bara NPCs.

I do think that people are focusing on the wrong thing though. The biggest problem with modern tools is that they allow people to produce sloppy, work that isn't up to spec, but which is at least presentable and capable of hitting deadlines, as opposed to the previous state of things where they were unable to produce anything at all.
The bottom image could easily be just as good as the top image with added detail, but they put zero effort into that and everything in it is wrong.

The worst part is that a lot of the core art team worked on a pseudo-MOBA that has art direction way closer to the original Spyro games, but because Activision had far stricter deadlines and like 60% of the art staff one Reignited were outsourcing crews mostly indian lol their talents were absolutely wasted.

Original is kino, unique & dreamlike.
Bottom is too cluttered and looks generic.
Remakes are always shit because the designers fundamentally misunderstand what made the originals good. They also have massive egos and tend to change shit that doesn't need changing because they think they can improve upon the original, or because of the "modern audience".

They're pretty great. The lead character design on that game is also one of the guys who did a lot of the dragon designs for the Spyro 1 remake, and they look WAY better in concept art because they've got far less oversaturated color palettes and more consistent anatomy compared to how the 3D models turned out.

The original was intended to look realistic, and is just shitty because of hardware limitations. The remake is intended to look like clay or plastic to decrease the budget.

My only real complaint here would be the grass obscuring stuff and I guess that is a design decision whether on not you want the player having to hunt through grass for shit, doesn't sound very fun to me though
Maybe they could have higher contrast or more shine on the boxes and gems

The enemies, portal, etc. you would recognize once you encounter them the first time same as the original.

I dont understand how anyone can shill the Spyro demake when its been nearly 8 years since it first released and despite its “success” inspired zero followups. If it was fucking great we would have a Spyro 4, even Crash got a new entry.

I don't see how they can be successful by the expected standards of modern games sales.
Back in the day these were primarily kids games and effectively the most popular kids games due to the style and ease of simply jumping into them and playing. Nearly every kid with a playstation played spyro.
Today basically no kids play these kinds of games and go straight to roblox, minecraft, fortnite, COD, etc.
So their only market is either nostalgia bait or people who are specifically into platformers which is a niche today in comparison to all the other genres.
Can't see them ever gaining the same kind of mainstream appeal. And if they do not have mainstream appeal big studios will not make them.

This isn't really a problem in Bethesda games even though they have tons of detail and items as well.
I feel like the real issue is having so much static shit that is just useless and does nothing.
If you aren't going to let the player interact with anything why is it there at all?
Too many funhouse walking simulators. Piles of gear, supplies, armor, axes and swords around you but the only thing you can pick up is a single glowing crowbar.
