The three witcher games have very different combat and basic game feel.
TW2 has 3 acts, with the second being the best, and the third being the worst. So yes, it gets better, but if you hated the start, you won't like what comes later.

Gwent was very well liked and recieved, which led to the standalone game being made, not the other way around.

I loved Witcher 2, hated 3 from the start. Opinion didn't change even as I forced myself through all of the content trying to find the fun.
There is one exception: Hearts of Stone is VERY good, almost Assassins of Kings tier.
The first game is really good as an RPG and a story, but the gameplay didn't click with me as much as the second game. Still glad I liked it enough to try Assassins of Kings.

The story and the world itself are good, but the combat and gameplay loop really brings it down.
There are also certain parts in the story where the pacing sucks and the story itself is kinda cringe.
Blood and Wine is kinda peak.

This is a long time RPG trope and was not invented or popularized by new vegas. Also the Nilfgaardians are not really Roman inspired. They're most similar to the french empire invading the HRE if I pick to a historical analogy.

Ya, no.
Gameplay - especially combat - sucks ass. There's not much you can do about it, even with mods, cause it's all derivative stuff imported wholesale without the slightest understanding of what made it work. You had detective vision, Bamham combat with rolls out the ass like an even shittier Dark Souls - and worse, a ton of their devtime was spent on visual tech they had to axe anyway, so everything remains undercooked.

What's good is the self-contained stuff, especially Hearts of Stone; Iris von Everec remains the best - and hottest - chick in all the games, with Shani a close second. Blood and Wine was also the last time CDPR was competent; we've yet to see them return to that level, after they assfucked themselves trying to make GTA: 2077.

They "balanced" it later by heavily debuffing stamina regen while it was up, so you couldn't do jack shit while it was on - made every fight feel like you were fighting mooks 5 levels over you. The trap spell is the best (not saying much there), and you can probably also make a case for Force push.

I don't recall Quen stifling stamina but that may have been the case on release. Whirl was busted at the time and I built around it.
The real bullshit was the 'next gen' update that changed several of the mechanics and destroyed some of the meta builds, yet didn't touch the Alchemy tree. You can still become a god chugging 4 elixirs and critting everything for 227% base damage, but can't have the food health regen do fuck all apparently.
