I got one on release with Mario Advance and Doom, it was like having a SNES in your pocket. The SP having a built-in backlight was mind blowing as a kid (never knew about the gamegear back then).

Pure kino. Not only were the GBA games amazing, but it also inherited a lot of the SNES lineup. Original had a shitty screen that was useless at night and had terrible glare in sunlight, but the SP improved on the screen in every way.
The only game I had for the first half a year was Super Mario Advance, which was a souped up version of SMB2.

You have to admit, the backlight was genuinely a game changer. No more weird accessories. No more playing by street lights or fucking LAMP LIGHT like some 1700s pioneer about to die from dysentery. You could play under the covers with no problems at all with the SP. I had both the GBA and the SP and once I got the SP I never went back. Ever.

It's the best childhood handheld of all time.
I remember Nintendo magazine had a launch cover, of an astronaut playing it in space, this was the era of the best advertising posters across the board. It was just a deep dive into all the advance sp games. I read it over and over while waiting to get mine
Just the thought of a back-light was incredible enough for car journeys

Being able to play your existing Gameboy library, plus new shit like Golden Sun was amazing. Only bad thing was that you needed some kind of carrying case, because you couldn't just leave a GBC game in the slot and still fit it in you pants.

I bought the power pack thing for the GBA (basically made it so your GBA was wired to the wall, it completely replaced the battery section) so I never had to worry about battery life unless I was out in public or on the road with family. And I mostly used the light at home in the night so I didn't have to worry about the light consumption too often. But I do remember feeling like I could never go back to the original GBA when I got the SP even though it still worked perfectly fine. It had a backlight, it used a charger rather than batteries. It felt like the jump from SNES to N64 even though it was basically just GBA 2.

Usually, even if you want something very much, you still have this feeling "and that's it?" when you get it. Not with this little fella. Still somewhere in my box with little treasures, but the battery was already very bad many years ag9.
It's a shame that fucking nintendo for some reason not selling old consoles, they could make a lot of money with all of them. And I will definitely will get myself a clamp handheld with Linux support. Thor looks very promising, Batocera devs already working on making the magic happen.

I mostly just used it to play pokemon sapphire/leafgreen. I mean I definitely had other games, but none of them really stuck with me. Frankly if you'd asked me in 2006 what my favorite GBA game was besides those two I probably would have said the port of NES Bomberman.
Honestly despite owning every nintendo handled from the GBC up until the 3DS (and I guess the switch) the only one I ever really explored the library on was the DS. Even as late as 2016 I was basically just using my 3DS to play pokemon moon and my DS flashcart where I actually had a pretty decent library of titles like TWEWY, Ghost Trick, 999,Sonic Rush etc.

I think an overlooked part of what made the Advance such a big deal is that plenty of kids didnt have their own "big" console or PC but got hands on a Gameboy due to the Pokemon craze or parents getting in on Tetris.

For me it was quiet literally a generational leap happening as I was only rarely allowed to play on my brothers Playstation and rarely on our shitty family pc.
Thanks to the Advance it really felt like I lived through the 8, 16, 32, 64bit eras in a matter of years.

Got it for my birthday along with a Yu-Gi-Oh game. Most played that, Dungeon Dice Monsters and the Pokémon games. Other than that it was mainly tie-in games. Simpsons Road Rage, Beyblade, Robot Wars, Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy, Bionicle and a sidescroller shooter based on that movie Evolution. I always felt the best games were the ones that accepted they were 2D. Spyro had this isometric game with an open world map full of minigames and I don't remember enjoying a single one.

Also the thing's battery was and still is outstanding. I left mine in a drawer without charging it for years on end and it still turns on. Meanwhile my 3DS had its battery outright fail and need replacing after only a few months of not charging.

The phat DS is one of the worst pieces of hardware Nintendo has ever released. The software blew dick as well since it was an exploratory development era and everyone was trying to make touch screen games that justified the format. I put Twilight Menu on my 3DS recently and outside the DS Pokemon games (which I don't like) there's fuck all I actually want to play from the DS's library. Nothing holds up visually and the gameplay of most of them sucks. All the actual games ended up getting enhanced 3DS versions.

It’s insane that Nintendo had a fully functional GBA implementation built into the system and then just locked it away forever. Like bruh, you had a license to print money and decided against it? Trauma center 2's fantastic, even if 1's a little tech-demoy. Twewy's still best there, the DS Rhythm Heaven plays totally differently to the buttonbased ones, the DS fire emblems are both kino despite being buttugly, infinite space is /potential/ the game, and its the only way to get based shorthaired tomboy princess in Radiant Historia. Luv me some metroid prime pinball too.

Rereleases of MMZX, Etrian, Ace Attorney and Castlevania do kick the average exclusive quality way down, that I'll grant. Some real stinkers where you wouldn't expect them too, the Atelier DS entries are god awful.

It's still my favorite handheld of all time. Countless hours of playing under the covers at night. I've been playing on handhelds since the GBC, and I always remember playing pre-GBA SP under the end table lamp in the living room. Occasionally with a worm light but those sucked ass. Only really used mine on car trips. GBA SP went with me in my pocket everywhere during my middle school days.

GBA also really did have an amazing library. I've seen a lot of people talk shit like it was all Super Nintendo ports (as if the SNES didn't already have a fucking good first party library), but I have countless memories of playing Megaman Battle Network with friends, Boktai, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, Golden Sun, Mario and Luigi SS, Fire Emblem, I could go on. I dunno how old you are OP, but it's you grew up with smart phones, something you might not appreciate is the clamshell design. Back then screens weren't as durable as a modern smartphone screen. Being able to fold it as protection and to make it smaller in your pocket was a god send. This was before everyone accepted having massive smartphones in their pocket as well. Strange how times change.

My friend had one of these and it was neat. I kind of dismissed it as a novelty back in the day, but now with homebrew software I actually think it looks great on my TV. I even play with my SP as the controller with that special cable that I thought I would only ever use for the hidden Animal Crossing island on Gamecube.

I bitched and moaned to my family that I wanted to play Pokemon on Game Boy like so many of my friends, so 8-year-old me got a Game Boy Advance as a Xmas gift in 2001. I was shocked when I realised neither of the two games I got were Pokemon, but I was smart enough to know I couldn't show any obvious disappointment in the face of such a great gift. So for the holiday season I played a whole bunch of Super Mario Advance and Wario Land 4. I did end up liking both games, so I suppose my family got what they deserved in the end by broadening my tastes and making me more of a loser gamer nerd, haha.
