Is this worth playing?

MoD + MoT is my favorite VN/SRPG ever but you have to start with Prelude. It's a VN first and foremost so avoid the series if you don't like hours of reading in between battle sections

Absolutely. Masks are both fantastic games and I will swear by it.

Should probably play Prelude too but it's very boring in comparison if you are not into game of thrones politics stories. The problem is characters in the first game matter a lot for Masks so get to it. Not mere cameos. You need to know who's who or payoff in the last game will go over your head. Get to it.

Its an incredibly basic bitch dragon quest style jrpg. I didn't have any trouble getting through it, its just mid as fuck. Its not especially long and there isn't much optional content so you can get through it pretty quickly.

If you like world building stories and the characters, you'll love it. But you won't really know until you play it. I had trouble sticking with it. Took a lot of breaks. But it is a very good story. And the closest thing we had to a Suikoden game after Konami killed that franchise.

You can also try watching the first season of the anime, if you want to dip your toes into the world. But just the first series. Skip the second and third one and play the games.

I pirated mobius and enjoyed it pretty thoroughly, will buy the next one. I do hope the series returns to form with an SRPG, because the gameplay getting noticeably better with each new entry. It would be a pity if there's no Uta 4.

if you're super into Utawarerumono and want to do the basedface when they reference things then like how Ukoh was created or how Oshtor got his mask yeah its a good time. Super wasted potential though. The game is about exploring a new continent but you are literally there for like one chapter of the game and then you never go back and the rest of the game takes place in the normal country. It is fun seeing the capital city though

The ending being a cliffhanger sequelbait was a kick in the nuts though because it took them years to announce a sequel but now we're good.

I played all three back in 2023 on my vita and when I finished Mask of Truth, I Immediately bought all 3 on PC and replayed both Prelude and Deception. I was too burnt out to continue to Mask of Truth but damn, these games gave me the worst case of post game depression I’ve ever had. In terms of media I played/watched/read that year, Utawarerumono was definitely the highlight.

I actually quite liked the slice-of-life episodes in MoD. After that MoT felt quite rushed.
Both are great games though. Atuy best girl by the way.

Mask of Deception yes, half the point was to bring in new fans of the series. Mask of Truth absolutely not without playing Prelude to the Fallen. You'll probably still like it but the payoffs related to the first game ramp up heavily so you'll probably be lost on a few things.

Don't like that Prelude to the Fallen and Mask of Truth have the main character say goodbye to all the other characters before they die, it's a little too corny. I especially don't like it in Mask of Truth because Haku comes back to help like 10 minutes later and I never pegged him as the sort of person who'd do all that, the actual end of Mask of Truth was perfect with how he appears to Kuon in a dream just to say hi, then peaces out all casual.

You take up a role of a bum with amnesia. Your main goals in life are eating, drinking and lazing around. You achieve these goals by somehow attracting a bunch of pretty girls whose personalities can be summed up with one, maybe two words. As in any decent anime, your inner circle also includes a total bro character. Can you guess what happens to him in the end? It's not a spoiler if you've seen it happen at least 7 times before!

There are about 15 plot battles total across 30 hours or so of gameplay, each battle taking about 10 minutes to complete. The rest of the game is mostly filled with pursuit of your main goals, as listed above. The plot doesn't really kick in until you're almost done. If you somehow manage to click and auto-combo your way through these impossible odds, you'll be rewarded with an inconclusive ending pointing to a sequel and a picture of the main girl's butt.

I'm not even saying Uta 3 is bad because at minimum it's an 8/10 game with the highest highs in the entire VN franchise but good god almost every con about 1/2/3 rears its big fucking ugly head in this game.

Eruruu is a sweet village girl but Kuon was way more fun and dynamic as a main heroine. I could even tolerate her more "overbearing" nature when I realized that she was subconsciously projecting the way she was raised onto Haku, and she mostly stops acting like that halfway into MoD anyways.

Lovable cast of characters that's easy to get attached to, excellent world building, war drama and politics, feels. The sequel has an amazing MC who you can't help but root for. It's really just a true fantasy epic with fantastic payoff

The series has more in common with JRPGs than the mystery thrillers you mentioned, if you dislike Slice of Life and are too ADHD to handle the slower pacing I would avoid it

I think it's pretty similar to Danganronpa as far as reasons to like it go. They're completely different stories with different vibes, but the setting, atmosphere and characters are usually the main reasons why people enjoy both series in spite of the flawed overarching narrative. Utawarerumono is still leagues above it in the storytelling and music.

The anime's artstyle is utter garbage and it (obviously) skips and bolts through things at a rapid pace.

I started with the first anime. And it's probably the best adaptation of a game I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot going back to the 1980s. I then went and played the game and sure, the game has more world building and stuff. But that's because it's 50 hours of reading dialogue. And let's be honest. Not every single piece of that is necessary. Especially all the extra stuff with Kamyu. The anime adapted 90% of what was necessary. You're just lacking some extra character development and plot for Yuzuha and Kuuya. Kuuya and Sakuya are the characters that were lacking in the anime because they didn't have enough time. Almost everyone else was developed enough. I mean, it says a lot that the characters I liked in the anime were still my favorite in the game. The only exception was I ended up liking Sakuya more after playing the game.

This is all just for the first anime series though. The adaptation for Masks was terrible and should be skipped.
