Why did analogue horror games never reach the same success of the videos? They are basically the Lovecraft of zoomers and reinvented the horror genre, but games did not follow up

It worked more when it was complimented another genre. poppy playtime I think uses analog elements really well as a form of worldbuilding.

This is really underselling what it is.

Analogue horror focuses on
>psychological horror
>playing itself off as believable real footage, often trying to get in the viewer's head (not that anyone would actually believe it, but it's really easy to get super immersed in it)
>little reliance on jumpscares

I especially love the 2nd point, being "believable" is one of my favorite genres of anything and there isn't even a proper term for it. I like games that mix reality and fiction leaving me unable to guess what is real and what isn't (the intro of MGS3 is like this)

The most popular analog horror in the last year has been this one

and all it is is jumpscares and spooky faces and a neat climax.

Literally, yes. The original premise was essentially found footage and other in-universe framing devices, like television broadcasts or phone calls. But most analog horror doesn’t even bother with framing devices anymore and it’s literally just a normal generic horror video with a non-diagetic VHS filter that doesn’t even make sense in-universe

Local58 is the only good analog horror. All others and posers and were made by zoomers who have never actually been in the same room as a piece of analog technology in their entire lives and use are just using overfiltering to hide the fact they have no talent artistic or otherwise
Anonymous No.725429187 [Report]

analog horror involves compelling interesting stories and settings that play off "found footage", "creepy/ otherworldly vhs documentaries or instructional videos you were never supposed to see" and the general feeling that what is being presented is real, analog horror games however break all that by being first person walking simulators where you outrun a monster.

The thing is that a game needs to be compelling in the gameplay first to make way for a cool concept, setting and story and characters and monsters and what not.

So yeah, basically what these analog horror things need to do to translate well into games people won't shut up about is being good games first, substance over style.

Like, I would enjoy a backrooms game made by the forever winter guys for example, thirdperson, hazmat guy stranded in there, same combat and mechanics but it's the backrooms, that is just better than trying to immitate the videos but with the cool story and moments replaced by jumpscares.

actual answer: most "analog horror" games dont really capture what makes analog horror work.
most of them are just found footage games with a vhs filter on top and when they do get closer to what actually works they're usually just ripping off mandela catalogue or some other popular series.
the only game that i think has truly captured the energy of analog horror is shipwrecked 64.
real shame since i really like analog horror
