Classic RS is just really unique, it's a sandbox that you can play at your own pace in whatever order you want. Also Jagex run it very well compared to most MMOs with player polls, and it also helps a lot that modern RS is handled so horribly that anyone who wants to play RS will just play OS.

The biggest problem with private servers is adherence to muh nostalgia. They are all trying to recreate the game in it's exact state 15+ years ago. This is simply not good enough by today's standards. Old Maplestory becomes exponentially more boring once you reach 4th job and realize just how little content is available in lategame. Every single time there is a /v/ guild, everyone always starts to quit once they realize endgame is an endless loop of Zakum, Horntail, Krexel, then getting leeched by a Bishop to level up.

This is why it's absolutely critical to remake the game as Nexon America are doing. It can't just be pure vanilla, they need to bring Classic Maplestory up to standard for the current year.

I don't think they're going to go far enough. Even if they manage to fix a lot of the glaring issues with old maple and balance everything out the gameplay is still fundamentally very dull and repetitive even by MMO standards. They either need to overhaul 3rd and 4th job or take the game in a completely different direction to keep anyone but the most dedicated of whales hooked.

IMO they should focus on social content since maple was always better as a chatroom anyway or at the very least add more interesting quests and pqs at lower levels to break up the monotony of grinding in the ant tunnels until the end of time.

The thing is, they added a brand new area, Forgotten Hollow. This is by far the most promising sign of their design philosophy; it shows they are not simply creating a pure vanilla experience, and recognize the need to adapt to present day standards and evolve. YeouMS let you play on your internet browser because it was recreated from the ground up. The devs had ambitious plans, like retooling classes (said they were going to make Pirates completely different). It is a shame, the beta was up for a couple days and it literally felt like playing it back in the day. All the areas were really populated, Lith Harbor was especially packed. Nexon definitely knew it was a huge threat.

I remember that my solution to people way stronger trying to steal my spot was to just deal like 55% damage to every enemy and not bother finishing them off so that with the way the exp worked in that game when they finished it for me I'd get like 90% of the exp. I'm pretty sure that at times it increased my exp rate since it was like being able to one shot everything instead of 2 shotting.

I remember the drip feed rotation of cash items, the baffling balance decisions, the strange porting job of non-kms content, the rampant duping, monster spawn problems (Dead Mine only had 2-3 Miner Zombies per map). I kinda remember it, I had a couple of 4th job classes. What you are talking about sounds like early alpha, while I got into it later into alpha and didn't have any of the issues you are stating. The cash item rotation didn't bother me because I don't like nx items and they had a transmog system which to me is infinitely better. It also seems you missed the very brief beta period when popularity exploded, as it was a very small server beforehand. I recall it being a competent private server with the cool benefit of browser gameplay, which was the main appeal for me.

i only have experience from playing private servers, but i enjoyed grinding and farming in the not so optimal maps due to always being quiet. i also like the idea of having a level cap that isn't constantly being adjusted as it's nice finally hitting max level even if it means you now shift from leveling to just farming meso and other stuff, but i enjoy that aswell.

do you think a lot of people will hit a hardwall early on even if we start with 2nd job only? i'd imagine they shifted the experience gain from just 1x due to the experience cliffs that hit you at certain levels on top of everyone already knowing the meta how to level if they didn't change anything.

The easy answer is having a diverse range of options on every level bracket, which they don't do in numaple since you level up so fast most of the older content doesn't matter, especially the rewards.

i do think a bigger overhaul is indeed necessary as i doubt people with limited time and modern games offering daily and weekly and stamina systems in general just offer the rewards fast so very slow progress would probably put people off rather fast. i also like your idea about interactions with the game and enemies to be more active which i do think they could do to some degree atleast even with the slow playstyle of the game. i also think the diverse options for maps, grinding, enemies and farming would be nice so we won't end up having just couple of maps held by different mafias around the clock. i don't mind grinding in non-optimal maps but it's still a bit lame. i do hope guilds come early as i much rather talk in-game instead of having to constantly switch discord or something as it's way easier outside of some extensive planning and such.

i'm just very interested to see and hear others thoughts about the game and all these sort of what if's and what could they do to make things better.

It was post-big bang, and had a lot of the things nostalgiafags hate about nuMaple (potential, cubes, vicious hammers, etc). On top of that, they were well into the pattern of rolling out new character classes every event cycle. I remember Jett and Phantom were the two recent classes, half the ppl in Bera were playing one and they were extremely OP to an annoying degree.

That being said, 2012 Maplestory still retained many of the positive qualities of the old days. PQs were still relevant, especially Romeo and Juliet PQ which was largely neglected in preBB. In fact, party play was very much the meta from level 70+ where you go from Romeo and Juliet PQ to LHC grindparties to Future Henesys/Stronghold Parties. Late game was far better than pre-BB where the meta was paying a Bishop to leech you.

There was one leecher at best, the HSer, usually a Phantom.
Everyone else fought because the monsters had such high HP, it was impossible for one player to reliably kill the whole map even if they were strong.
This is in stark contrast to post4thjob pre-BB where Bishops would FMA the Skelegon/Skelesaurus map with Genesis, and there was a big market for buying and selling leech. This persists across preBB private servers too.

No, I like the era too. Potential system was early enough that it wasn't so exponentially destructive to Maplestory's scaling, so it was just a neat way to get some extra bonus abilities like capping off your jump stat without Haste. I think classes got revamped during the time and they were this midpoint where they still maintained their individual identities while still receiving some QoL adjustments that are similar to today's homogenization. New classes like Mercedes, Phantom, and Demon Slayer were very unique and enjoyable, though they did also mark a dramatic shift in how classes were designed.

The current game litereally comes with an auto-battle toggle built in. I think you only get an hour or 2 of it for free a day? (I might be mistaken, been years since I played modern Maple).
My point is, if you just want to level up rapidly and expereince a day or 2 of some nostalgia, the current game is great for that.
