Remember a few years back hair simulation was the hottest topic in vidya? Wtf happened to this?

it was part of the gameworks suite nvidia had designed to lower the framerate of their competitors
but games are made for consoles primarily, and consoles are amd, so except for a select few nvidia partners, nobody gave a shit about the ultra aliased crap and nvidia moved on to the opposite of aliasing, low res smearing

Turns out nobody gives a shit about flowing hair when you're in the middle of combat. Also nobody gives a shit when you just cover it with a helmet of some sort. Like anything its just one company trying to outdo another is some fashion to wow investors into giving up more of their money

Like most tech, it hit the current compromise between frames and payoff, because your rendering budget is not infinite.

I'm now reminded of all the tech videos posted over the years. From water physics to soft body shit. At the end of the day, it's never chosen over the advanced graphics when it comes to performance budget. It's a shame. I'd rather have cool mechanics than the most realistic fucking brick wall or fog I've ever seen.

It's unironically a lost tech. We've lost it along with transparent textures. Now everything needs to be grainy and dithered, but thanks to the fat the game engines also lost the ability to render clear images, the final output is blurry too.

For me it was havok physis back in the early 2010s. Almost every game boasted about destructible environment. Now nobody bothers with it anymore.

Black people hair is harder to render than entire streets full of background NPCs. Leaving them out would mean there are double standards. It was easier to give up on the technology than to suffer the consequences of angry journalists.

I don't think many people like wearing helmets. With that, I have no idea why every game doesn't have armor layers. It should be seen as a lot bigger priority than its treated as.

People like their character to look a certain way.

Dogshit aliasing on transparency was a thing since forever and only was ever good on one console (Dreamcast) - especially PS2 during its launch was infamous for having a terrible AA or rather, lack thereof. It's just people memoryholed this because now they can run 360/PS3 games at 4k so they no longer see the dogshit dithered grass and hair on games like FF13 or MGSV, which ironically kids are now calling the pinnacle of visuals and optimization, even when they had the same style of bad graphics memes posted back then (like the ff13 dog, the empty hallways, the bugged LOD in MGSV, the shitty lens flare, the dithered hair and grass etc.) and compare it to similar memes with FF7R like those cave pics or your pic that is posted now all the time.
History will repeat and definitely some retard kids will run 7R at 8k and pretend oh how good we had it back then.

It's not cheap, but it's scalable and looks great, Marvel's Spiderman is one of the few games that uses actual spline/particle hair, but it's also an open world with ray tracing. I'm surprised as to how games these games look and run while pushing a lot of neat tech.

>>725438167
It's an issue with modern rendering tech, transparency in general looks worse, lighting looks a lot better, there are ways to fix the hair but developers end up spending resources elsewhere because the hair looks good enough, good enough is gaming in general.

God I hate these Unreal Engine samefaces. Even with Cloud who is supposed to be a pretty distinct character, he looks like he's straight out of the Unreal Editor character generator. Well he probably is but still. And that god awful shading.

If you have checked out any new games, Vampire Masquerade 2, Outer Worlds 2 and whatever else, they all have almost identical NPCs because devs are so fucking lazy. Not even talking about any possible wokeness here.
