Christians are allowed to defend their nation and people, it's something you can take from Jesus' sacrifice in John 15:13 that uplifts someone who sacrifices themselves for others. The entire reason why Jesus is portrayed with the sun behind him is because Roman pagans were being converted and they tried to conceptualize Sol Invictus in Jesus' imagery to grasp the religion better. Eventually the worship of Sol Invictus disappeared, and the sun behind Jesus' head became a way to symbolize him being the light of the world.

Some stuff just ends up becoming a cultural sticking sticking point. The Book of The Shepherd of Hermas isn't canon anymore and is considered either apocryphal, heretical, or something to read for ethical reasons depending who you ask. Because it was so prevalent in early Christianity for hundreds of years it's why we have the "Angel and devil on your shoulder" thing nowadays. That image from that specific book is why that persists to this day in general society.

The only reason it was kept out of Japan was because Hideyoshi and Tokugawa were worried it would allow the Jesuits to get a political footing in the country and upend the Shogunate running the country by showing peasants they had power. It had nothing to do with them not wanting people, they actively allowed missionaries and Jesuits freely into the country until the Shogunate got paranoid. Christianity also ended up taking hold in Japan anyway, it's roughly 2% of their religious people which is several million.
