I don't know, I've never used it outside of making throwaway accounts to download mods that aren't posted anywhere else for some reason.

Mostly the latter in my experience. It's a great platform for organizing games and facilitating communication and voice chat. And I even disagree about it not having community servers, because there are usually general community servers for any given game where you can network.

I have no doubt that the former type of people exist, and that there are a lot of mentally unwell people using discord and running cult/groomer servers. The great thing is, you don't have to interact with them at all. Servers are by-invite, so you don't have to join any communities you don't want to. I use disc exclusively to find people to play games with and for voice comms. If I don't like the vibe of a server, I just leave when I'm done playing with those people.

Discord hate is mostly just /v/tards having no real friends and only being on public servers.
Discord is currently the most useful social utility ever made for the internet.
It has the convenience of skype, the flexibility of teamspeak combined with IRC, and it allows for video streaming that makes cytube and rabbit completely irrelevant.

Instead of needing 20 accounts to do all my events, to do custom MP sessions, to do groupwatches, to just shoot the shit or to organize things more generally, it's all in one place, and when this inevitably disappears into nothing or gets turned into a skinnerbox where you pay $500 to do anything more than textchat, it will be a sad day because it means everything gets more complex and tedious and annoying again. It means I'll have to walk people through shit or be forced to troubleshoot why someone can't hear another person in Steam VC, or find out halfway through a cytube session that the custom encode I was forced to make got fucked in the output and I need to stall for 20 minutes so I can redo it.

Of course, doing shit like this requires friends, and everyone here makes it clear they join randos and get mad at retards on the internet. It's like when people bitched and moaned about public facing forums like GameFAGS or NeoGAF being filled with children and posters with main character syndrome. You weren't invited to the places with all the likable and interesting people, because none of them liked you.
