I'm kinda glad Monster Medals aren't in HD-2D. When I was a kid, my collection autism stopped me from finishing GBC 3 because I couldn't proceed until I had gotten every medal of every rarity and the grind eventually bored me and I picked up something else.
I know the board game isn't in HD-2D either. Is there anything else specifically from the GBC version that isn't in the HD-2D remake?

for real though it's mostly the latter than the former, though the former helps the latter come out easier and better

i don't think there's any real "optimized" spot to do that, there's some places throughout the game where for example metal slimes spawn but being metal slimes means you don't really get to do much before they all flee. Same goes for the dedicated spots where only slime enemies spawn, which means 1 in a gorillion encounter is a metal slime spawn and then they all flee anyway

Is crafting worth it in X? Seems like unless I wanna go all in and grind for a couple hundred hours it's cheaper to buy stuff from the bazaar.

In act 2 you have to use whatever's on hand, of course. I've never felt the need to grind for a particular monster, I just use what I get.

I have a few quick questions about DQ3HD2D:
1) what are the maximum stat values?
2) if I change classes, do I keep all my learned spells/abilities from the starting class? What if I change it a second time?
3) do bosses have items that only have a chance to drop/be stolen and if they do, do they also have a rare drop in addition to a normal drop?

ye that's kinda the point, to create some sort of hybrid class. Ideally you can class change and make one character learn every ability (bar the hero exclusives) in the game, but changing class also "resets" the character to lv1 with half of his old stats. Every class has certain stats growing more than others (as you would expect, like warrior not having anything to do with magic and mage not having anything to do with strength) and changing class puts you on the relative stat growth chart, so if you change class too many times you'll eventually lose the edge of having physically strong mage or whatever else
tldr diminishing stat returns, so it's only really useful to get a physical class like a warrior, martial artist or thief to go to a magic class (usually sage is the best option) to really make use of this system. Especially since magic to magic, or rather cleric or wizard to sage is kinda useless given sage already learns every magic of those two on their own. The typical endgame is Hero + 3 sages for this reason
Keep in mind you can only change class once the character is at level 20, and various classes keep learning abilities up to lvl 45-50, meaning you can do it at lv 20 but it's probably better to wait some more.

It's funny because it seems like the default response among random people online is that his work sucks (even outside of the people who just hate him for politics). To be charitable I think a lot of people hate that DQ often has like one "Town" theme, one "Battle" theme etc.

It's a sentiment that only started cropping up with DQ11 because the original synthesized soundtrack used poor quality instrument samples. Which, funnily enough, Sugiyama also gets incorrectly blamed for as the in-game arrangements are done by other people inside of SE (they're usually credited as "music programmers"). Granted, 11 was probably some of his weakest work, but he gets a lot of hate for the wrong reasons.

I didn't know that about the arrangements though. As I said I know little about music but Sugiyama's MIDI work on NES/SNES sounds great to me, and it seems like people who know about music theory are impressed with how he managed to translate his classical style to 8bit/16bit hardware. Seems like being able to wrap your head around that is a rare talent. Especially for a guy who was established in his career when DQ started.

Even back then I'm pretty sure the arrangements for the actual game hardware were being done by other people. I want to say it was Motoaki Takenouchi, who also did the versions of the songs for the first Dai anime (and composed for Shining Force 2/CD), but I don't remember if it was always him.
The nu-style arrangements that have been used since Theatrhythm aren't very good and are definitely a big contributor to modern anti-Sugi sentiment, but I think a lot of it is also downstream of what happened with VII and VIII on 3DS even though barely any westerners played those games and that was probably on NoA being cheap more than anything.

The music situation for DQ is a bit of a special case, as Sugiyama was an independent composer who worked on commission, much like how Toriyama/Bird Studio is contracted for DQ art and designs. Basically Sugiyama would be requested by Horii and the team for songs they need for a particular game, Sugiyama would send them scores and from that they would have at least one person interpret those scores and implement them into the game, credited as music or sound programmers.
Hitoshi Sakimoto and Tsukasa Tawada are notable music people in the industry who worked as music programmers on the Heartbeat DQ games (6 and 7). If you listen to Hourai High's soundtrack, you can hear Sakimoto use some of the same instrument samples he used in DQ6. Hayato Matsuo is another notable on as not only did he work on the music arrangements for DQ4-6 DS and DQ10, he also worked closely with Sugiyama on the Dai anime and took over for Sugiyama on the Shiren games where you can hear many of the same samples in the DS DQ ports.
DQ11 was originally arranged by the people who do the synth soundtracks on the mobile ports and spinoffs which don't sound very good, and now many of those same arrangements are being reused in every spinoff such Heroes, Treasure and Monsters, which is very unfortunate as I think Sugiyama's work deserves be to treated with much more effort.

It basically is. It's dolled up compared to what previous games have had, there are a couple of cutscenes, but don't expect the same kind of effort that went into act 1 and 2.
A tip is to follow the story objectives until the game tells you it's time to fight the final boss. There are some options that don't open up until you've gotten to that point, and you can do the sidequests in pretty much any order. Also go see Sylvando's dad, you get by far the most important reward from him.

So KH games tend to feature (KH-specific versions of) SQEX characters alongside the didney characters. But it's primarily characters from FF and TWEWY.
What if they expanded to other SQEX franchises to draw characters from for KH4, including Dragon Quest?
What would that look like?

it's not square characters, it's specifically characters made by Nomura, and that's cause he just needed puppets to populate the world and didn't want to make a gorillion ocs in the first game. Which is also why he used characters he designed, he didn't want to bother other authors at SE knowing full well the characters were gonna end up as stand-in roles. The only exception was Vivi from FFIX, so a character he didn't design, cause the rest of the KH team begged him to do it. And even then that was before, cause he eventually made the gorillion KH ocs from game to game and as such the SE characters have less presence, cause now there's actual plot related characters there instead of cameos.
Autism schizobabble aside i'd want some DQ monsters in it, or rather enemies inspired by them, by they didn't do it for FF monsters either so i doubt it

Yeah that's a very genuine criticism. It doesnt fix the issue but on the PS2 version you can run diagonally and the hero will run twice as fast.

it's not citra, it's a new one built from citra, and it asks for games to be decrypted before they can be installed. Joker 3 does work (cause i'm assuming by patching it with the translation it also got decrypted) but legit games won't install, or stuff like Terry 3D do install but then don't boot (or rather, they crash the emulator when you try to boot). Which is exactly the issues i also used to have with citra before so nothing changed on that front

I've always enjoyed his battle themes though. They're mostly perilous and not very heroic sounding because these are horrible monsters that are killing people, destroying towns, and ruining the world and they're specifically directed by an evil force to cause harm.

Actually can't wait to play DQ1HD2D.
Ever since watching speedrunner strats it refreshed the game for me.
Like going to certain areas that have certain blocks of enemies. And of course the speedrunner tries to push it so they don't have to go to the inn an extra time but a normal player doesn't have to do that.
But yeah, using certain spells on certain enemies, knowing which ones you want to fight, it was a very fun day.

I've been playing DQ8 3DS on Azahar and if you up the internar resolution it does not recognize the photos. However, if i take the photos and trasfer the savedata to my actual 3DS, it does recognize them.
That makes me think, since the photos are in physical space in the SD, would it be possible to use the photos from another player who has taken them?

I'd recommend Pixel Remaster for both, but I realize it's not to everyone's taste. But for 1 I won't recommend PSP because I don't like that it changed the magic to the MP system. I prefer the original spell charge system. PS1 also has the spell charge system so it's something of a middle ground between the archaic NES and modern Pixel Remaster.
For 5, I suppose it doesn't really matter. I don't think it ever received a lot of changes between it's various ports and remakes, aside from GBA with it's bonus jobs and dungeon. But it's also got the typical GBA issues of a bright palette and lower quality music, and screen crunch. It all depends on if you care about those kinds of things.

Focuses heavily on nonlinear progression and exploration. Probably the most similar to DQ in terms of execution and setting. Minstrel Song is arguably the most complex game in the series and can be overwhelming, but a newcomer can trudge through to the end just fine. 2 has unique generational mechanics with class-based recruits like DQ3. 3 is relatively easy compared to the others but also easy to get lost in.
>SaGa Frontier series
1 retains Romancing's nonlinear gameplay but in a futuristic setting with different worlds, similar to SaGa 1 and 2. One of the easiest games in the series, and each character's campaign is pretty short. 2 has nothing to do with 1 and goes back to medieval fantasy, but is the most linear and restrictive game in the series as plot becomes the forefront. Wouldn't recommend SF2 personally.

It's mostly a visual problem. The Switch (and PS4, and 3DS, but those are JP only) version of the game mixes high resolution character sprites (and not the good looking kind) with 16bit world tiles inspired by the SNES version of Dragon Quest 3. On the upside, those tiles aren't noticeably stretched like in the PS4, 3DS, and the Mobile versions they're based on, but it's still a visual mismatch that not a lot of people like.

We know Sugiyama already did some work on the game, but historically Sugiyama has always composed music parallel to the development of the games. I imagine finding someone to fill in for him mid-development can be a real sticking point but it shouldn't preclude progress on the rest of the game.
When Toriyama died, it had been nearly three years after the announcement of DQ12. I get the sense that for DQ designs are typically done very early on, and Horii talked about development for DQ12 as early as 2019. That, and Toriyama hasn't been the sole character and monster designer for a long time, so I find it hard to believe that most of the main designs wouldn't be done by that point.
This just leads me to believe they attempted something really ambitious and probably had to rework the game at some point. The last time we heard about a DQ game having development troubles was DQ Treasures, or rather the game that was originally supposed to be DQM3.

Mainline DQ games kind of have carte blanche as far as game dev timelines go. My suspicion is that Horii is old and wants this game to be a fitting final chapter for his career because it is likely his last DQ he works on in this capacity. I think the unfortunate reality is there is an amount of profit that a port/remaster has to make before they make it and whatever internal calculations they have at SE are showing that they just wouldn't reach that number. Keep in mind the main audience is still Japan and pretty much every DQ game is fairly accessible there. There's iOS versions of VII and VIII, and if you want it on original hardware they are fairly cheap. When I visited Japan, the used game stores were bizarro versions of American ones. Tons of DQ games and they were priced like FIFA/Madden, JRPGs in general were plentiful. Shooters and other western stuff was rare/niche.

Anybody try DQM3 on Switch 2 yet? I highly doubt Square gives us any kind of update for it, but curious to see if it runs any more stable at least?

Romance subplots are why. There can't be gay sex in DQ, and genderbending love interests introduces too many new problems and isn't worth the effort. One thing I've noticed is that there doesn't seem to be much stat growth from synthesis, I'm used to Joker and when you smash enough monsters together they become really strong even without good talents, but even when I do it with some of my monsters like the Gem Slime they really aren't that strong.

I dont know how synthesis works but i assumed that the stats of the two monsters were multipliers for the result. So merging a jobber from the field, or a lower leveled monster with worse stats with your synthesized monster would make a weaker monster. Thats how it feels anyways.

Now for my final thoughts on Dark Prince

I've played some monsters games before. Mainly Joker 1 and some of Monsters 2 3D. I've found synthesizing monsters to be way easier in this game, both with actually being able to get the monsters and how intuitive some of the synthesis' are. The mole hole turned the quest to make higher tier monsters from annoying to just being some effort since I could just pick up old monsters I had made from there. I had the problem that monsters didn't have insane stats like Jokers at levels 10-20 but it turns out this game wants you to really level up your monsters and give you 5 million xp Metal Kings to do it with. Just a different design choice which while a bit less satisfying to start is understandable and it's more fun smashing bosses with your level 50+ team and their high stats.

The plot was what you'd expect for a monsters game I guess. It exists to move you on to fighting harder enemies. I liked having Solo and friends around sometimes and the plot turns from kind of dumb to pretty alright, The dying mum bit is just too cliche for me. I liked Rose and BENNET was an ok guy. Jokers 1 played itself pretty straight the entire time and I think they did it a bit better there.

Took about 28 hours to beat the game and made a pretty good team

I actually preferred this design. It means you can get a team set up you like and then feed them gorillions of EXP and still enjoy some satisfying, balanced-ish endgame fights, since there's an expected range of stats you'll probably sit at.

DQ 1 and 2 remakes sound pretty good from the previews so far, it's even rumored that the first game added monster party members and the second game has a 4th girl party member that's another cousin.
