Shift Up fucked up by not adding an extra security step to the key validation, this is literally like cracking software from the early 2000s.

When parrying or evading, wait until the attack is about to hit before pressing a button. If you press too early, you get hit.

Newer units tend to be better however so many catch up that way.
You will know if you like it for the story and stay for it in that case.
