I also use linux. I spent a lot of time trying out different things for my frag movie. There is a version of lawena out there that works on linux but I found the easiest way is to record by just using the built in tools. All lawena is, is just a frontend to the built in tools anyway

Basically just call `host_framerate X` with X being the framerate you want, you can do a thing where you set the framerate to something crazy like 600 and frame blend it down to 60. I didn't have good luck with that, it looked awful cause of flicks. Afterwards go to the demo, go to the tick you want. And type `startmovie nameofclip` into console. You can stop recording with this command endmovie

Finally you'll get a bunch of ".tga" files and a ".wav", there's an ffmpeg command out there to convert it to an mp4 file but you're gonna need to look that up
