I think the soul working as a separate entity functioned better in Undertale. It was a twist at the very end of the game and you were piloting a child's corpse. In the Pacifist (IE good) ending, you healed your puppet's mind and body, leaving him to be adopted by Toriel and have an actual life. In the Genocide ending, you reawakened your host's dying thoughts and created a psychopath who wants nothing more than to kill.
In Deltarune, we're a separate entity from chapter one and it's going to be difficult to thread the needle of Kris being a separate actor from the player. It worked in Baten Kaitos, as an example, since you were more explicitly some sort of guiding force that the protagonist actually addressed. Then, when he went over to the villains, you speak to the rest of the party for the first time, revealing yourself and leading them directly from that point on. If Toby can handle the tension over the remaining chapters, it could make something both novel and really good, but I think it's just as likely to collapse like a souffle.

I've got bigger reasons to be uncomfortable about controlling Kris
>>527535541it depends on how much the player is self inserting. note that kris is not a self insert in the story but as little as we know about him people still self insert really hard. People will just naturally relate less for every degree of seperation and by leaving some things undefined it makes it easier for more people to just copy paste their own feelings. sure some people can roleplay as or self insert as anything and everything but youll find for instance the vast majority of table top players will never actually play a character of a different gender from them even if there are people that have no problem with it.
