I really like Mercs, I was doubtful going in but as a ssf player this has been really fun. Gave up on my HC ssf runs though, between servers and the duelist merc coming out and 1 shotting me in .1 second through lucky maxxed block 4.5k health and i dont remember how much armor taught me that I'm bad.

Just thought i'd toss out the usual PSA for especially less experienced players or people who get easily frustrated (like i do, at times ;)):

Do not give up on your starter too quickly when you run into difficulties.

A very, very typical thing to happen is that people give up on their builds once they start to run into issues in late yellow/red maps, and think "it's the build".

90% of the time, it's not the build - it's user error/lack of gear/lack of levels.

Most builds will hit a "soft" wall around red maps where you need to actually invest and properly scale the defenses and the damage beyond the bare minimum which is sufficient to cruise up until that point. Dying a lot in Softcore in early progression without investment is NORMAL. Struggling with damage a bit on tankier builds early on is NORMAL. This is the floor you build upon.

This can mean bringing additional defensive layers online, adding cluster jewels, getting enough levels to have enough passives (plus flat life, never underestimate that) to actually bring multipliers online. Understanding how valuable different damage modifiers are for your current setup, diminishing returns, etc.

Keep in mind that if you "abandon" your build at this stage, take the little bit of currency you have and reroll, you are spending a lot of time to bring a new build to a similar stage, only to likely encounter similar difficulties again.

Ask around, ask build creators for help, ask here, learn about your build - and invest into it.

Unless you just really hate the feeling of the skills you're using, trust me - most of the time, you'll get over that hump and things will start to "click".

Addendum: also, if your build is feeling lackluster, avoid Mercenaries for the most part. They add +40% hp to rares, +50% to unique bosses. If you're struggling solo, imagine what that does ;)

Snaking is easier to use, due to being a pseudo-ranged skill with auto targetting. Still, I wouldn't claim people have abandoned Earthshatter, which is overall the stronger skill, even if it has less QoL. If you look at HCSSF, Earthshatter is more popular than Snaking at higher levels, while Snaking dominates slower players.

Eye of winter is better damage but ice spear flies around everywhere and covers the screen. You need good damage to actually kill mobs with it though.
Blood magic is an easy way to take care of any mana issues and reserve almost your entire life pool (which you need to do to scale Ivory Tower). The end game energy blade setups can drop it but it requires better gear. Honestly even just putting a couple dozen divines on the basic ivory tower setup is enough to melt the end game, this build is fucking busted. The only reason it's not nerfed is probably because Lance is fuckbuddies with someone at GGG or something.

You can get a Malachai's Simula to test out blood magic before respeccing your entire tree. I was actually using that for quite a while.
Also, don't forget to quality and enhance your enegy blade, it gives a lot of ES. Also, getting 100% crit asap is an insane improvement for CoC builds, so a 6L ivory with increased critical strikes is pretty great for the build. If that's not enough you need more str and/or int for the ascendency node.

Banner skills suck because valor charges aren’t stored in an easily readable location and also it is hard to mentally calculate your future valor because it’s gained from hitting something, and hitting something is hard as hell to predict in this game. There is a similar problem with warcrys. I just don’t use banners mainly because they’re not that good anyways. Would probably be better if valor was gained on cast, or if banner skills were auto casted when you reach maximum valor. Or, if stored valor was permanent similar to Vaal souls. Actually yeah if banners were literally identical to Vaal skills it would work way better. Warcrys need a clearer animation boundary because it’s hard as fuck to tell if it hit the enemy. Like we’re at the stage in the game where you can’t stand in the middle of a huge fight and expect not to die. But you’re clearly rewarded for doing that with warcrys. But once your dude is strong enough to actually do that, the benefit of a warcry basically is solely due to exertion anyways, so the warcry itself isn’t really doing anything. Its just weak as fuck design imo. Or they could add like a status debuff above the guys head if he’s currently affected by a warcry, similar to a curse. I dunno. Im just not enjoying pressing my warcrys like I should be. Shouting skills in d4 are pretty snappy and responsive and visually clear. Warcrys are somewhat complicated using weird English words but that’s kinda a feature overall I guess.

Seeing the talk about using boat gamble as an atlas I gave it a go on my SSF character.
Everything I did on him was only in +10 alch and go maps. The picture was the best of 3 lost shipments I found. It feels much higher then 6% but random is random. It does seem you are guaranteed 1 tattoo or runecraft as all 3 of mine had 1 in them.
The Harvest to Food, felt very underwhelming. I guess if you don't want to Faust trade in trade league, then it's fine. But being able to guarantee you will get currency you want via trade or just using the harvest currency would be better. The text on your crop drops is fucking tiny and I was not sure it was happening.
Maybe getting the more Verisium node (if you can kill it) plus Bismuth if you want ward I guess is probably the most use. I didn't get a either of those off of Niko spawns, just Crim/Ori.
