i like wow better than 14 in a lot of ways, it has better environment design, better class design, more playstyle flexibility, but its story department has suffered. during koticks time, very little attention was paid to it, most of the development went into cash extraction features, and their shitty employment practices have resulted in a revolving door of writers and team leads that see the direction of the game getting jerked back and forth from the alliance vs horde squabbles of BFA to the apocalyptic afterlife of shadowlands then back to idyllic grounded DnD fantasy of dragonflight and TWW, now we are back to extra dimensional apocalypse. its all so tonally disjointed, and there hasnt been a cohesive vision on the writing team or amongst the leads because its different people writing it every 2 years

demonology came out the other side better for it. it was always very silly that demonology warlocks could turn into shadow illidan forms and go melee for some reason, it completely broke the class fantasy of being a demon summoner who sends minions to do their bidding, always felt very unthematic with what the rest of the spec was doing, and ultimately this allowed demonology warlocks to get one of the most interesting rotational kits in the game.

that said, if you strip out all the necromancy from unholy, you dont really have much left. a couple of dots and some bland ass melee strikes. the necromancy has taken over that spec as the main theme. if you got rid of it, i dont know how you would make unholy interesting, diseases are kind of boring as a concept and as a gameplay mechanic, festering wounds are just annoying, and death coil is a pretty generic shadow ball spell. there's not much there to work with that isnt themed around the necromancy aspect.
