maybe to you it isn't. personally, I like having a solo levelling spec and a healing or tank spec for dungeons. and sure, you CAN heal or tank in a levelling spec, but it doesn't feel as good as having a dedicated spec. I also like collecting multiple sets of gear, it's fun and makes me think more carefully about quest rewards for example. I choose my class based on whether or not dual spec is available. if it isn't, I'll often just play a pure dps class. and before you go on about spec identity or roleplaying or whatever you next cope is, in my opinion having multiple roles is part of the identity of a hybrid class and being limited to one role actually makes me feel less connected to the class. at the end of the day, dual spec isn't make or break for me. I'll happily play with or without it. but having the option is really nice and I don't get the pushback against it for any reason other than you didn't have it when you first played the game and therefore it's bad.

Should I level a hardcore paladin or warlock

Paladin is cool, can fill a bunch of rolls, can save people in the open world, can roll on everything and be a golden chad. But pretty boring to level up to 20, then they hit a power spike with SoC and Verigans, then they’re pretty boring again all the way until WPL and EPL

Warlocks are pretty cool, fast and fun levellers, all 3 specs are viable for it. But they don’t care about gear or anything so in that sense it’s pretty unenthusiastic progression

I also quit SoD in p1 but keeping stable with 100k players isn't necessarily bad with how little effort they put into it. The next attempts at "classic+" will be better.

The thing about hardcore that makes it superior to all other forms of classic is that 1-60 is always a journey, and that’s all vanilla wow ever was

When a fresh server comes out there’s always a “I’m wasting time I need to level I need to gear i need to farm” that just doesn’t exist in hardcore. In hardcore I play a dwarf for example, I chill for a while at every inn and have a beer, I crack jokes with players i come across. As an undead I watch as other people die when I could easily save them, I’ll train mobs on them and vanish if it means o can get a chest. And as any class you can RP a different play style altogether. You can (and I successfully have) play as a mercenary like Skyrim that helps people with quests for a fee, works great if you’re a mage warrior rogue or priest. As a priest I spent a lot of time running around saving people in exchange for a donation, i actually made my Mount money for. 40 and 60 in a day and 3 days respectively by saving people and asking for money, a 60 I saved from a devilsaur gave me 800 on a seperate occasion

I guess what I’m trying to say is that hardcore makes vanilla more than just vanilla. It’s got all the aspects of 2005, but added RP elements that just make it all the more fun.

Warriors are actually the worst class in the game in many ways, pretty much any other class have a reliable way to solo elites and even easy instances like Dire Maul east, but Warriors basically have noone at all. In PVP they can both be slowed and kited or deadzoned like hunters which results in them regularly getting beat in 1v1 pvp even against players 10 levels lower. The tradeoff is their damage scales with gear way better than any other class.

For me it’s hardcore vanilla. It’s got the best of all worlds, you miss world PvP that is a shame but it makes up for it in all other ways. The worst part of Warcraft had always been max lvl. All you do is hover in a city waiting for a queue pop. In hardcore no one cares about that. It’s all about the experience of hitting 60, of surviving. There’s so much natural RP in the world.

I had insanely geared 80 and 85 twinks from MoP and when I logged onto them I levelled up, blizzard XP squish made it so I was 1 xp from levelling up and I soooomehooooooow discovered the capital city I was parked in on my characters, despite having turned off my xp

I remember it fondly in 2019, one of the guys had his wife go on vacation to Greece for 10 days, we all took our vacation days, moved our rigs to his place. 7 of us with a fridge, and 3 mini fridges stocked with beer and pre-made chili, bolognese, curry and rice. I don't think anyone is actually saying it was great. Just that it's not as simply black and white as people act like it is. It had good aspects, the overall experience was just dragged down by poor choices. The thing is that classic gives an opportunity to fix some of the mistakes they made back then - not all of them, but pacing for example which was a major flaw of WoD - so people are focussing on how Blizz can highlight the parts that were good, not on the aspects that sucked.

If I want to get into Cata Classic, will I be lost if I never did vanilla / tbc / wotlk? I want to play Cata and then MoP but it feels almost "wrong*" to not have experienced the rest of it. I'm an autist who likes knowing my character progressed through the events for the story. Is there any way to properly do tbc and wotlk within cata classic? I have a hard time mentally not caring. tbc and wrath levelling content are still intact within cata and mop, and you will need to go through those zones to hit max level. nobody really runs the raids anymore so you will miss out on some story conclusions but you'll get the gist of it. vanilla is the only content that's been totally revamped and replaced with new stories in cata, but like you said you can hop on the vanilla classic servers to do that content if you really want to. I'd recommend doing it at some point because it's the best levelling content there is imo, but at the same time you won't be "lost" if you don't do it. the new cata content does a fine job at introducing you to the current state of the world. if anything, you'll be more lost if you never played warcraft 3, because wow continues a lot of storylines from there at the beginning. like tbc and wrath are pretty much direct continuations of warcraft 3 and other than a couple recurring characters don't really have much to do with the story of cata. wow itself doesn't really start settling into its own narrative distinct from w3 until cata and mop. vanilla barely even has an overarching story, just a lot of little stories.

if you want to be safe, my advice would be to start now cause there's a 50% exp boost right now, but it will only be active for another week or so until the MoP prepatch drops. with the buff, that's probably enough time to get most if not all of the way there. just spam dungeons through the rdf from 60-80 if you want to save the tbc/wrath quests for later when you're finished wc3 and can take your time with them. those quests aren't going anywhere.
although I will warn you a lot of conclusions for major wc3 characters are locked in raids in tbc/wrath, so be prepared to watch some videos or find a group doing transmog runs if you want to see those. or you could do them when the anniversary servers move to tbc and wrath I guess.

In all years playing wow I had maybe around 10 instances where open world pvp was actually engaging and fun. 99.9% of world pvp is you dying without any chances to fight back simply because if another player doesn't think he has 200% chance of killing you he won't engage. In fact, I noticed that players of the same level, where it is not known who wins the fight, tend to just ignore each other because it is simply more productive for both parties. I think, in theory, open world pvp can be very fun but blizzard suck at game design so we have what we have.

World PVP only works when it's forcibly even'd out. You only need to look at EvE to understand why oPvP doesn't work: the loss isn't worth the victory. turning PvP on should shunt you into a specific stat set that doesn't interact with anything but other players, so you could level / quest / engage with the overworld as normal but when a player engages on you, it sets you to fuckin, idk level 75 when you're in a 70-80 zone no matter if you're a 70 or 80 with no other scaling on it.
