I don't usually hang out in these threads because I'm not caught up with the game. I haven't had as much time as I'd like. But it's been over a week and I just want to talk about the Angel Beats event.

I loved Angel Beats and a lot of other of Maeda's work but to be honest it's been years for me and I've forgotten all but the most important plotpoints so I came in fresh.

Most of Irie's was pretty heavy and nearly brought me to tears, but I had to take a break for life stuff after the student council celebrates in the cosmos field and I was almost crying (maybe a tear or two) but I felt fine. I thought they did such a good job portraying the unfairness of death. Of what the living do int he name of the death, all the wishes and thoughts they assign to them and all the turns we make our lives take in their name even if it's completely opposite to what they would have wanted. I really felt they recaptured the magic of Angel Beats again.

But then I came back hours later to the last scene and I was just expecting a small conversation witht he main cast. And then they take us back to Irie's grave and she talks about how she can barely recognise Shinnosuke as the boy she went to school and I just started to feel my heart break. He tells her that he's been living with another woman for 10 years and that he has to move on from loving her because it's what the living do and it's not letting him live right. And then Irie asks herself if this even makes any sense, "Can human beings really love so desperately?" she asks and I couldn't.

I cried, and I cried, and I cried then. And I'm going to cry againw riting this. You just feel so much pain for Shinnosuke the boy that lover her so desperately he did all that he did for the student council in her name. You feel so much pain for Irie and the live she didn't live. You feel so much pain for the shel of a man, in his 40s, barely able to love someone shares a house with because he's still holding on.

You also feel a little disgust, and a little disappointment. How did he go live with someone for 10 years without truly loving them? How is this man, this middle aged now man, still so deeply in love with a person he only knew as a child. Even Irie questions her, she says "we barely spent a few months together".

It feels a little bit sick, a little bit childish and naive, but most of it it just feels so tragic. You fele the pain of the love that never blossomed and also of the very real love that this man has carried in his chest for his own reasons for longer than Irie was ever alive. But most of all you just feel "it's not fair". You feel the terrible injustice of death, of such a young death, the terrible unfairness of Irie never living that young love, the awfulness of the guy that surivived her and it just all hurts so so much.

I just wanted to write this somewhere, because it really really touched a nerve in me. I found it beautiful, and on par with any of Maeda's best work. And just that event alone has made my time with this game super worth it. I hope other anons liked it as much as I did because I thought it was an amazing story.

Chapter 4 was initially supposed to be a single chapter as is. Then they realized that it would be too much shit for a single chapter, so they decided to split it in 2 parts. We know it from one of the Maeda's early interviews.
In the end, it was a right decision, because you can see in 5.2 how shit it is if you rush an arc like that.

See, I kinda agree with some sisters that Chapter 4 isn't that... great, but not for the reasons you're thinking.

First, we need to look at the root of all the problems. Too many characters. There's simply way too many characters in this game and it's fairly obvious the game was originally designed to have only 4 squads. 30-G, 31-A, 31-B and 31-C. For some reason (money, it's always money) they decided to shoehorn in 4 more squads, duplicating the number of characters. Now it's the part where you start sperging out, but I'm gonna stop you right there. The 4 extra squads are great and include some of my favourite characters. but they bring next to nothing to the game outside of side events, which means they just end up clogging the already short main story time.

Now, chapter 4. Megumin's arc was great, Tama's as well but I expected they would explore her past some more. People comment that the main story took a huge toll because of these 2 character arcs and while I agree with you, I don't blame them. If anything, both character arcs should've been longer, especially Megumin's, otherwise it wouldn't make sense to do a 180 in a couple of days. She should've spent more time in the Dome, but let's not get into every single detail. The major fault here is what I pointed above. Too many characters and too little main story time.

So, why do I think chapter 4 wasn't that great? Precisely because the main story took a huge toll. Sounds hypocritical? I don't think so. Why? Because like I said, the character arcs were great and it's not their fault this happened. Too. Many. Characters. Too. Little. Main Story. Time.
An entire chapter was dedicated to two characters and it's mostly WFS fault.

Why is it WFS fault? The fucking useless, boring, no one gives a shit dungeons. I cannot stress this shit enough. The reason main story updates take so long is because of the fucking dungeons. Can you fucking imagine? Yes, I am seething.

90% of the people that play this game couldn't give a single shit about dungeons. Replace them with a couple of fights and give us more visual novel. Not only we get more story, we get updates much faster meaning even more main story. This will help with the problem of having too many characters by being able to do bigger chapters and pumping them out faster.

This way we can have proper character arcs without the feeling the main story hasn't developed in ages, quite literally years when talking about JP.

The other problem with Chapter 4 is that they didn't even try with 31-A. Like, sure ok they had to neglect other squads, but holy fuck as a Tsukassie fan she and Karerin got absolutely fucking shafted. I'm fairly sure that Karerin, outside of Karen-chan, only said "mmHmm" the entire chapter. Fucking grim. They didn't even bother showing how Yukkie, Tsukassie and Karerin cared for Megumin and missed her, all the while Megumin was always thinking about 31-A. Unironically, it comes across as if those three don't give a single shit about Megumin or Tama. In Yukkie's case is even worse with how much she bullies Tama, it genuinely comes across as malicious.

My last complaint about chapter 4 (that I will at least mention) and to a certain degree with other chapters, is the lack of visible progress. Mountain - Mountain - Mountain - Boss rinse and repeat. So much land has been recovered, but it just feels like they haven't done much to show how impacful the seraph squadron work has been so far. The story could really use a time skip, but unfortunately it's just something that doesn't go well with how HBR works. Maybe a time skip if there's ever a "Part 2" to the main story.

I could certainly mention other stuff, but I'll leave that to people who bother reading all this and feel like chipping in.

I don't usually interact with the /hbr/ guild, but I really wanted to share my thoughts and read the thoughts of others.

I still think after HBR's delay they had no confidence in the game, and they were ready for 1 year eos, but wanted to tell the full story. So with 4.1, 90% of the story was done. Also why Global plans were initially scrapped, even though the very first announcement even featured an English website.

But.. suddenly, success. And thus it became endless days of stretching what little was left of the story. I'm confident that if you really wanted to, you could finish the main story in 5-10 hours past 4.1. So little has happened, and so little really still has to absolutely happen.
