From there you just do 8 matches on friday that feed into the ro16 like normal.

They never do anything really exciting or special, their team is almost always the exact same every league, they can only advance either from two better teams having bad luck (this league) or a horrible group (VGL21). Teams get 3 games here, which is a single game's at bats in baseball. /skg/ is called that line because over their history they have consistently been below average. In honor of the no MOTM from this past weekend, I looked through all the times this has happened on 17 in the 4CC. It happened twice
/m/ vs /sci/ in summer 17
/po/ vs /o/ in spring 18
Both matches were draws and had at least 1 player who wasn't rated since they had gotten reds right after coming on the pitch.

I haven't checked all VGL tournaments on 17, but it did happen in the /civ4xg/ vs /domg/ match in VGL 11 which also ended in a draw and had 2 players not rated due to a 3' red and immediate substitution. The highest rated player that match was a single 7.0 player but the game decided he wasn't worthy of MOTM.

Even Cyclo era hype videos suffered sometimes from the same problem because of his odd music taste. By no means were they bad but he peaked with VGL 13. VGL 12, 14 and 15 were incredibly weak while VGL 16 and X-2 I liked a lot and find myself going back to them sometimes.

aquantis was a jump in quality no questions asked but his videos feel more of a blender flex and he goes more into storytelling in his presentations while the main cup kinda falls flat. It's a ton of effort at the start with the explanation of the point system and other yadda-yadda only to skim through all the teams in a minute with simply huge team names flying towards the screen. The music also took a hit because aquantis' focus on storytelling doesn't allow for hype music that needs stuff to move fast in the background.


What I like about this cups hype video is that it went back to focusing on the teams competing in it and showing them off properly. It's nice seeing all those celebrations, goals and other moments in proper team reels again and the tidbits, as meaningless as they are, add a nice touch. As a manager I really enjoy watching the team reels and looking out for /mygens/ players, but that could just be me. Music wise it's also an improvement again as it is something that gets you excited

I have thought that maybe the league should adapt an 'opening ceremony' style of presentation for the league, because I really loved the /2hug/ story telling stuff but watching it at the start of every day and then having the short run-through of the teams was a little exhausting.
I would love if the Fridays had a big introduction to the weekend as a whole, the storytelling and explanation stuff, and then went into a more formulaic run-through of the match day, and then Saturday and Sunday just featured the match day run-throughs.
I know the finals weekend should be a little different, as each day is ever so slightly different and Top 8 probably deserves something a little special but for the 3 weekends of groups... i just don't think we need that full exposition every single day.
But, again, this is all a lot of work to be doing For Free so I appreciate anything the guys can put together. The quality is great.
Music wise you'll never please everybody. I think everybody has a different idea of how to create tension and excitement and it's reflected in peoples editing styles too. As long as somebody isn't putting something genuinely sleepy up there, you just try to appreciate the vision if you don't quite mesh with the music.

Everyone in VGLco vouches the /mjg/ manager. It's just that he plays Blue Archive as well as other games. And doing the /bag/ cup to test the waters into managing a team is even recommended before jumping the gun to do the big leagues. Some started at /ag/ league, others in 4cc or vt league. The only holds new cuties back are RNG and tactical autism that some managers accumulated over the years.

I still hate the guy though for saying Star Ocean 3 is the greatest Star Ocean of all time. Clearly 2 is better.
