I played with maniacs on the maul & shield for a while, and noticed that it just absolutely raped maniacs. Took it off, didn't notice a huge difference. The few maniacs you need to kill in melee stagger and die fast enough, and mutants eat shit to break the line. Flak armor on the other hand is very common and thus my preferred choice.
Also yeah, take high voltage as your second blessing. If not that, then the -30% block cost because it's much more useful than a blessing with awkward cooldowns.

Are arbites cursed to use only blunt weapons? There are a lot of good talents that go to waste without them.

If you need boss damage (and support) on your melee, the regular shock maul is better because of the interaction between skullcrusher and the silly node that counts things as staggered, since it puts the damage amp on bosses.
If you have boss damage handled on your ranged weapon, or don't need boss damage for any other reason, maul and shield are incredible. The utility of being able to block ranged fire AND most overheads is very good, its moveset is good, its cleave is good, and the push cleave talent is easy to use with it since the push followthrough -> light combo has identical timing with the heavy -> light spam you normally do for horde clear. Its light attacks also rape armor.

I find that the old shock maul outperforms and basically invalidates the rashad, even though arbites is probably the best user of the weapon, ironically enough. I like the brown tac axe better, beetus has enough cleave to make it actually feel really really fucking good for horde clear while still being tac axe otherwise.

Unless you're referring to havoc 40, in which case, ehhh? I've seen a tankier vet equivalent of arbites, where they focused on spamming the impact grenades, and used the blue pump shotgun. Weirdly effective, bosses weren't a huge issue. The dust hasn't settled yet.

Every time I try to use crusher, I'm disappointed by its everything. The special does jack shit for damage, it only staggers. The move set is kinda mid. The overhead takes 2-3 business days to complete and does less damage than two lights from the shielded maul EVEN AFTER skullcrusher. I haven't tried arbites in havoc 40 myself yet, but every one I've seen use the crusher, swapped back over to old shock maul when they got serious.
In aurics, the shield maul shits on a dozen armor anyway. Break the line with the cdr from execution order keeps everything on their asses anyway.

The shield special is useful for a whole host of things, including interrupting flamers that would otherwise limit your positioning. It's so useful that I prefer to dump defenses on the shield. I might only use it a handful of times per mission, but most of those are pretty important.

I think it mostly comes down to what kind of utility you need. So, skullcrusher vs the ability to block bullets and overheads, and flashbang. A better player will definitely make shieldless work better, I think. I can definitely admit that I'm not one of those players, so I'm sticking with the shield, and taking the true grit crutch node.

the moveset of the crusher is also great, you can enter/swap to single target and horde clear from any point in the combos or from the start, and the push attack with surprising amounts of finesse and cleave so it works as both a starter for single target AND horde clear, and can lead into both combos too, if you actually compare the movesets, the actual combos you use with the agni shock maul and arbites maul are very VERY similar to the crushers combos, where the only real difference is the agni is quick single target, arbites is amazing group clear, and crushers entry into both

Why would you run VIII executioner shotgun when its only upside is shooting extreme range snipers and crushers? Both are retarded points, shooting crushers with limited ammo in auric HISTG and above is a waste, and in havoc it's griefing; long range snipers are a rarity and due to minimum pellet count it's still easy to two shot them with the other mark. III does everything else better, you can still one shot headshot anything within 20m by right clicking, you can shit on mixed hordes, you can apply electrocution on bosses if you have no other source of it, the special shell doesn't deal less damage for no good reason, you have a bigger magazine and more reserve ammo, you have higher ROF, the unyielding damage is not only similar you also get more rounds before a reload.

Zealot has been thoroughly replaced in the department of retardproof damage trader, by the ogryn rework, and now arbitrators. Zealot still fills two invaluable rolls incredibly well in havoc 40, support being one of them. No class absolutely obliterates monstrosities like zealot does, whether it's stealth or fotf, thammer or thrust toothpick, while ALSO having excellent horde clear with flamer, and some of the most useful grenades.
Boss killer zealot in h40 is entirely a skill check, and I will admit that I'm not good enough to pull it off, and that's okay. Played with two of them that were good enough, stuck to them like glue, and it made the run a lot easier. I don't know how much of that was me carrying as the only good support zealot in existence between all the fucking retards, or the boss killer zealot carrying, but it did feel like it was the latter. The damage output on those guys was pretty hilarious.

I'd rather take a boss killer zealot over the average ogryn, arbitrator, and sometimes even psyker. Chances are, the zealot moves through the map too quick for a bubble cuck to keep up, and instagibs beast of nurgle anyway so why even bubble?

As for gameplay — something like Arbites' stance, but inverse, maybe? Slow down, become resistant to damage, and have infinite ammo for 15 seconds for Vanguard. And something with scanning and exploiting weakness for Ranger. More stuns, electric damage, maybe a new type of DoT?

This is objectively good. It's the paid cosmetics which need to go. I've been saying it before and it caused seethe for whatever reason. Darktide wasn't getting shit because selling cosmetics works on a crowdfunding logic, but even worse. Ability regen on all. The class has retarded amounts of toughness regen, gunner resist lets you just stand in gunner fire. +5% toughness is also good. Toughness regen speed is a bit of a meme stat, but can be useful when you're on your own with part of the squad. Block efficiency or stamina regen are both good. I'm not sure whether the class needs revive speed for any stagger breakpoints, and I'm not sure it matters.

I think the Heresy is boring (I've read Valdor like four times because it gives just these brief hints at Age of Strife crap that I'd kill for more of), but it's also been a resounding success. For ambiguous or serious crimes, the guilty person is normally taken back to an Arbites precinct house to be judged by an Arbites Judge.
