the end of the book (a /lit/fag can correct me if I am wrong, it's been a while since I've read it) is about him reflecting on his life, having an epiphany and him embracing how meaningless life is with a smile and peacefully. the priest is basically carmen, who comes at his lowest point to offer religious comfort. mersault gets pissed off at what he thinks is hypocrisy, reject him, gets his epiphany and then he accepts his execution with open arms, which would basically be his EGO in the PMverse.
