Alright I just finished chapter 4. It’s been years since I played undertale, and for the quick succession that I’ve been getting through deltarune, I’m still confused about some things. Mostly about the references from here now that most discussion about the game has gone past the basic plot.

1. What’s the deal with Dess? Most of the info that I got about her was from the part in Noelle’s house. Even then I hear everybody talking about her relationship to the knight, how she “disappeared”, and her talking from the dark place.

2. The weird smiling cat thing with the multicolored eyes, I think it’s called Friend , and the black jester looking thing with the orange mouth. Are they supposed to be the same kind of mysterious background character like Ghaster? Seems like they have some substantial info to have the fandom paying so much attention to them.

Granted I’ve pretty much been rushing through the game trying to finish all the chapters in order to understand what the fuck everyone else is talking about. Can you find the info about these characters just by playing the game more thoroughly? Or are these hidden in the game files somewhere alongside some ARG bullshit. I’ve been thinking of going fresh with a snowgrave route to try and get the rest of the secrets but from what I understand the amount that it changes the game is pretty meager. Lemme know what you fags think

1. Dess is Noelle's older sister, and it's directly implied in several bits of flavor text/dialogue across the chapters that she suddenly disappeared one day, and her disappearance caused an immediate rift in the Dreemurr and Holiday households, including Toriel and Asgore's divorce. We still don't know the full circumstances of what exactly happened, but at the moment one of the more common theories is that she was lost in the dark world somewhere (possibly the shelter), and the Roaring Knight is possibly her, now corrupted and twisted by darkness.
2. Friend is a recurring background detail in several secret/hidden areas, and they're an even bigger unknown than Dess. The best guess we have right now is that they might be villainous to some degree, but even that's uncertain.

Dess gets scattered references throughout the game. She's got some voicelines that might be from her going from context of what they say and her guitar sound plays inaudibly in a certain segment of the game indicating she is somehow involved with dark worlds.
That she's also the Knight is an assumption based on the horns of the helmet. With so little information it's impossible to say what her current status or motivation is for sure and it could be a Flowey situation where it's really complex and will require a whole level dedicated to explaining it.

It first shows up in Queens basement as far as I know, and just sort of vanishes. It shows up a few more times and matches spamtoms glasses. We know even less about it than Dess but it's a repeating thing. Maybe it's just the repeating enemy for the final stage: Dark Lake of Nightmares where we'll fight 3 at once but it's showed up in multiple places so maybe it means something.

So... what's the state of the "Noelle is the Angel" theory? I think the "angel meets with its desire" line combined with the "love finds its way to the girl" line kind of implies Noelle will trap Susie in a dark world. The unsettling depiction of the Angel reminds me of the "unsettling" depiction of a monster with a human soul in Undertale; it could hint at SOULelle. Plus, the Angel still continuing to play a role after being "banished" seems to disprove the "banishing the angel's heaven means banishing the player from the game world" theory.
