Alright I just finished chapter 4. Itโs been years since I played undertale, and for the quick succession that Iโve been getting through deltarune, Iโm still confused about some things. Mostly about the references from here now that most discussion about the game has gone past the basic plot.
1. Whatโs the deal with Dess? Most of the info that I got about her was from the part in Noelleโs house. Even then I hear everybody talking about her relationship to the knight, how she โdisappearedโ, and her talking from the dark place.
2. The weird smiling cat thing with the multicolored eyes, I think itโs called Friend , and the black jester looking thing with the orange mouth. Are they supposed to be the same kind of mysterious background character like Ghaster? Seems like they have some substantial info to have the fandom paying so much attention to them.
Granted Iโve pretty much been rushing through the game trying to finish all the chapters in order to understand what the fuck everyone else is talking about. Can you find the info about these characters just by playing the game more thoroughly? Or are these hidden in the game files somewhere alongside some ARG bullshit. Iโve been thinking of going fresh with a snowgrave route to try and get the rest of the secrets but from what I understand the amount that it changes the game is pretty meager. That she's also the Knight is an assumption based on the horns of the helmet. With so little information it's impossible to say what her current status or motivation is for sure and it could be a Flowey situation where it's really complex and will require a whole level dedicated to explaining it.
It first shows up in Queens basement as far as I know, and just sort of vanishes. It shows up a few more times and matches spamtoms glasses. We know even less about it than Dess but it's a repeating thing. Maybe it's just the repeating enemy for the final stage: Dark Lake of Nightmares where we'll fight 3 at once but it's showed up in multiple places so maybe it means something.

Something that's kind of lost is that you can't go back to previous zones to see what's changed, or just to continue storylines like the Papyrus, Undyne, or Alphys dates. But instead, hometown feels like more of a comforting, nostalgic setting than anything else in Undertale by far. I couldn't care less about Castletown, but Hometown is a kind of place I can just walk around and talk to everyone every chance I get.
That emotional low at the end of chapter 4 hit me like a truck, and I haven't been able to go back into "waiting for next chapter" mode since then. It's really bothering me how hyped I am for the next chapter, even though I know it's likely over a year away.
Some of the characters are worse. Some of them I just can't really bring myself to care about, like Rouxls Kaard. But most of the lesser characters just show up a couple times at most. In undertale, characters who aren't in the main cast usually just show up once, say two lines, then you move past and never see them again.
