This, basically. If we assume most of the Dark Fountains were created by Dess, then Dark Worlds and Darkners are based off of the Kris, Asriel, Noelle and Dess imaginary adventures. Then the FUN gang adventuresbare akin to someone's childhood imaginary stories come to life.
FRIEND seems to be a part-hand thing that can reach into Darkners and control them like puppets. Like playing dolls except the dolls have sentience and lose their free will when they're being controlled.
Schizotheory time: I feel like "the prophecy" might be a full reenactment of their past pretend-adventures, up to the point where Dess disappeared. Kris and Ralsei seem to be aware that their job is trying to act out this adventure perfectly to placate Dess's spirit or something. It might be something many of the adults in Hometown are aware of, which is why "the prophecy" is part of their religion. I'm betting Carol and Toriel are major players in this and are withholding information from the kids.

ANONS I HAVE A NEW SCHIZOTHEORY:
The "final prophecy" and the thing that drove Jevil and Spamton mad; is the game ending.
It's the realization that the characters, their personalities, the world, the history, NONE OF IT exists past the beginning and end of the game.
Think about it, Darkners know that their purpose is to serve the Lighters, they're aware that they aren't "real" but are ok with that as long as they fulfill their purpose. But what if they find out...that the Light World isn't real either? That this entire time, their existence was completely meaningless because the people above them are also strings of code fulfilling a purpose. It explains why Spamton wants to reach [Heaven] so badly. Our reality is the "highest" layer they can conceive of, free from the world literally "ending" when we finish the game and turn it off.
Ralsei is a very unusual Darkner because he knows the entire prophecy but isn't driven mad by it. That's because he was created with ONLY the prophecy as his memories and was created specifically to fulfill the prophecy.
The game only has "one ending", because no matter what you do and what outcome you get, you will inevitably close the game and stop playing, that is the "end" of everything. The Lightners have no choice but to fulfill their role, to play out a story, and then stop existing.
I think the "true ending" is all the characters coming to terms with the nature of their reality and deciding that no matter what, everything that happened was "real" and therefore does "matter". Sorta like DRV3 but better executed.

Ok today I am focusing on the Light and Dark "science"
The SOUL emits Light. So, I guess "Heaven" is a realm of SOULs, I think the Gasterfags can reconcile with this and maybe Spamtanons, Spamton is trying to get away from the Dark. Darkners I think, are either SOULs, spirits, Dark Souls. Everything is almost all "represented" to us to our senses, like Ralsei calls it fake, but to get the point across that the King of Spades card is that, in the Light, take away light, and take it away AGAIN, and now it manifests as a Darkner, which almost makes it sound like Ralsei is saying it's all in our minds, but Tenna and Chapter 3 is quick to add the idea of contracts, like it determines the form and function of Darkners, Mizzles being the clear example. Weird, but so far, we've had some hierarchy in every Dark World, with some exception of Chapter 4, which had much bigger fish to fry, showing that Souls CAN manifest in the Dark World through Gerson, and, I would argue, an implied hierarchy based on faith.
Anyways back to Dark/Light. I think the implications of a "double dark" with Dark Worlds is that there is some "void". A Phantom Zone. You can't the see the cube, you can't interface with the cube, but the cube is there, and can interface with YOU. Except the void is formless, spirits extract form through contracts, and the perception through the Light World further defines their form.

If you want a quick and cool example of why I think Void is canon, watch the Jevil segments in a windows, resize it however you want, and now imagine Jevil knowing he is outside the bounds of the window we perceive before we open the doorkey, and how much BIGGER everything is outside that window, and now his words about us being trapped vs him being free make a little more sense

Bro I just figured something out and where Gaster fits into all of this. Gaster has somewhat of a developer role though Deltarune isn't entirely "his game", as Gaster is also a fictional character created by the developers for a narrative purpose. He is like a demi-god at the whims of complete gods but from a Watsonian perspective he is who is changing the story.
I think the best ending will involve fighting Gaster and convincing him to remove the "meta awareness" from Deltarune. That means getting rid of the prophecy altogether. Making the characters completely unaware that they're fictional characters and that their entire existence has "an end". The story will end with Susie and Kris working on their assignment, believeing their lives will continue as the credits roll.
