Just uninstalled XVI.
Somehow it feels like it's really over now, X was the last good FF game now that I think about it. I kept buying them on name alone because they used to be so good, but I'll probably stop now.

I dropped after the marshland town where the innkeeper lady added fetch quests and "slay boars" quests to the main quest line. I realized I was skipping even main quest cutscenes by then, so there was nothing left. Everything was so padded with useless dialogue.
As for the characters, I only liked Cid, disliked the rest. Especially the MC felt completely unrelatable with all his tantrums and stupid decisions. And I'm expected to play as him and go along, while he is being wrong. Looks like it was the intention to have him always be wrong in everything, eg fighting the girl, then "who killed my bro" when it was him. Then when he finds out and goes all depressed because he killed his bro, they immediately show bro is still alive. Not just him, everyone except Cid kept acting like fools.

The world and story felt bland too, muggles enslaving mages was just too arbitrary, there is no way they could have. And all of them acting totally evil while totally depending on the mages too... "Slavery Bad" is way too simple and bland to be a good FF story. I read the spoilers already, and apparently they don't teach the people what's right, they don't even rebel, instead, the plan is to erase magic from the world because that will surely end all racism... That's an FF13 tier plot right there.

Combat was not for me either but I understand this may have its audience. I preferred the more "strategic" gameplay of old, managing multiple skill bars and chargeups and doggo and dodging in parallel was too much for me. I mostly just dumped my skills when they were off cooldown.

As for the positive side, I thought it looked great, especially the summon battles.
And I read they were "heavily inspired by Game of Thrones", and lolled when Hodor appeared.

Gameplay can be automated, and what Auto picks for you is what was optimal 90% of the time anyway. Timing your Paradigm Shifts is the main method in which you interact with the combat, and some encounters are difficult enough that inputting manual commands for specific strategies is your best bet.
One issue with the game is that Paradigm Shift doesn’t work as well when you only have two party members, and the game takes far too long to introduce a third party member to really open up the combat system.

FFXVI wasn't inspired by DMC, it was a Honkai clone all along. It was all a plan to ease the FF playerbase into accepting Mihoyo. Such masterful 5D chess. This is what Square was thinking as they kept on making dying gachas. This is why FFXVI removed party features, major cities, proper dungeons, RPG mechanics, endgame superbosses (only put into DLC) all for a game that is a barebones offline MMO at the same time FFXIV got a mobile release. It was always Square's plan to funnel FF players into gacha.

The GiW games are usually very easy and it's a common meme that square square triangle gets you through the whole game even on harder difficulties. Enemies (at least not the lowliest cannon fodder) in these games often block or dodge but you find your way around them or use specific moves to guard-break them.

If you want to kill them fast, don't go for the highest difficulty and remember to upgrade your weapons so your damage isn't crap. Or just spam the most damaging moves to victory. That works too but isn't fun.

And that's one of their worst problems. They can't go too far into action or else they risk alienating FF players who don't play action. So it's often super shallow. But for mainline FF action games? There's little to sink your teeth into. They can't hit the right balance.

FFXVI is far worse. There are no elements, no directional inputs, etc. In XV, the problem is any depth there's no need to explore because the basics and gaming the broken system just work too well. Even the item menu pausing time is absurdly broken for an action game. Just try having the same in Kingdom Hearts. Basically, FFXV's (however deep or shallow) depth is pointless.

In FFXVI, they removed features that FFXV had because apparently FFXV wasn't casual enough with a trillion training wheels on. So much that some mods like Logos Unleashed mapped Eikon moves to directional inputs which the base game lacked. FFXVI just doesn't have much at all.

The worst reason all the posts comparing FF16 to Hoyo is wrong is because FF16 has less faith in their players than a fucking Chink gacha. A Google search can tell you their games have element systems but the Takai thinks Final Fantasy players can't handle the same Pokemon

FFXVI is so barebones that the system if you tone down the effects can fit in a gacha. It's got one main player character, he uses just a sword and everything else would've been mapped to a directional input in a DMC game but they made them Eikon abilities. There's no element system, lackluster side quests, extraneous stat system, and shallow itemization are examples of ways it doesn't commit to being a character action game while at the same time implementing RPG elements in ways that don't really fully pay off. Status ailments are basically completely absent, there’s no real system of elemental strengths or weaknesses, very little in the realm of buffs and debuffs, and most crucially, loot seems like an afterthought. Weapons are just straightforward number increases and the overall system is shallow. A system like that can belong in a gacha and even then players would say it's too shallow. I still don't understand why Clive only has one sword with one main combo. DMC1 Dante has more with Alastor or even Force Edge. For what it's worth, Rebirth runs much better out of the box. DLSS helps a ton. Still needs a custom Engine INI to get the most out of the graphics though. Make sure to disable dynamic resolution for Remake as well.

I'm not xv's biggest fan- I played it on launch and had the typical disappointing experience at the time. Never bothered buying the rest of the story or watching the supplemental material- ship has sailed for me.
