There's three types of PvP where you use the finished results from running one of the game's 11 scenarios.
Weekly stadium PvP where the wins don't matter only points so you can promote/stay/drop between 6 different groups, with slightly worse rewards the lower you go.
There's Champion's Meetings where you have a specific track, length, and conditions to build for requiring a certain amount of wins to progress to the next phase over 2-3 days each, and then the finals where you final placement in that one single race determines a large portion of your rewards.
League of Heroes where you're giving 5 tickets a day over however many days and you earn points doing races with each ticket, and your rewards are determined by how many points you earn as you rise through ranks from Bronze to Platinum.

If you don't really care about winning/getting maximum rewards in the latter two there's no real meta you need to follow, and if you do, you're much better off trying to buy a starter account with strong cards ready to go from somewhere since you'd need to spend boatloads to catch up, I'm sure they exist out there somewhere.

They rework the guts mechanic. On launch guts was just a stamina reserve, that's why you can win the Kikkasho or HaruTen at only around 500 stamina if you have 400+ guts. The rework makes it so that it also functions as extra power boost at the final straight, and tie it to a new mechanic where if your hors is neck to neck with someone - they'll compete even harder to try and break for first.

On a good statted run everything is supposed to max except guts, which typically ends in the 1400s.
