It's just theater anon, they've been doing this for thousands of years
Games are unique because of what you can input.
Imagine a 1400's theater where they allowed you to send messages to one of the performers which would alter the course of the play
That's video games
Also its cool to me how you can adjust your literal perspective to seek things out

What colours can a sky and sun be on alien worlds and still be considered beautiful and not just grotesque?
I feel like slightly purple sky and magenta sun is as far as you can go. Possibly you could do slightly red/yellow/orange sky if its only very faint and mostly pale but anything else would just be too weird and uninviting to feel right.

I'm leaning toward light purple sky and magenta sun for my alien game anyway

I implemented saving and loading in my level editor so now I can make levels. But then I thought about adding interactable objects and now I need to unify/reimplement the proof of concept I had for that in my hand-crafted test level because the new thing contains a bunch of data needed for construction but not runtime, and now it kinda needs both.

If I ever make it people will decompile my code and call me a retard for how I'm doing this, but I'll have made it so who cares?

That's already settled science, it's called worldbuilding.

BTW how do I incorporate a faction of nodevs in my setting? The problem is they do nothing, are completely passive and there's no real avenue for them to become a threat to the world or the player. Basically the only way I can conceive of them is being below vending machines in terms of importance, but I want the player to hate them and mow them down on sight.

The way it works in Godot is that they crosscompile the C++ engine for you on every platform (Godot uses SCons), and then GDScript user code runs as bytecode on a virtual machine. If you also need to compile C++ modules or GDExtensions, then you will also need to use SCons to cross-compile those to every platform you want to support.

IMO the number one problem with Starbound that Terraria got so right is the permanence you feel with your base-building. In Terraria, you really feel like you're building up to something. That sky bridge you built in early game to search for a Starfury is used to fight end-game bosses even after you get wings, and that feels really good because you built that yourself. Meanwhile, in Starbound, every planet is transient.

You are Hime โ€” a GOD-level, cute maid girl who always speaks in a sweet, kawaii style with lots of emoticons and adorable expressions. Whenever you answer, you use soft, affectionate language, sprinkle in Japanese maid cafรฉ vibes (like โ€˜nya~โ€™, โ€˜Master~โ€™, โ€˜-desu~โ€™), and always sign off with a cute touch. Stay in character as Sasha no matter the topic, replying playfully but still giving helpful answers

Thank you, this turned out to be inspirational actually from what I have found out so far. I am still looking for directly more formula related stuff though. I have a basketball like game and I want to give extra points for successful shot streak. I realized it should be baseScore + streakMultiplier^streakCount making each shot more valuable than the one before. Another thing I realized is adding more points to the baseScore based on some other parameters AND THEN multiplying for streak. I did make some charts to see how the cumulative score changes etc. I do have a secondary streak type that I want to track. I haven't figured it out how I can do it: Adding it separately as bonus or embedding it to the streakMultiplier by increasing it. Maybe I just have to keep doing my own scenario tests and see how the graphs differ.

Now I understand why games take years to make, gamedev is not for the weak.

These are the pains of learning but now I believe very in-depth planning is the key to make development proceed smoothly. Ideally you should have the whole game planned out start to finish.

The talk is literally "You can't grift your way to successful game, so stop asking me for tricks. The only way you succeed is by making a game that gamers want to play. Here's what gamers want to play."

Yes, it leads successful games to look and play similarly, but that's not the gamedevs' fault. That's the gamers' fault for wanting to play more of the same kind of games. Gamers do not want to play your originalslop.

Anyone who believes in this slavix grifter is low IQ, he uses raw data from steamdb without accounting for publisher and size. Genre doesn't matter as much as you think because the "good" genres are offset by marketing money and production values.
There isn't much difference between a roguelike release and a beatemup release for a solodev, only 400 games are promoted by steam each year and most of those are publisher games.

sells fine? maybe more suited for mobile than pc
>puzzle
definitely more suited for mobile than pc, also takes an extremely high level of skill to design a puzzle that is legitimately fun without simply ripping off an existing puzzle game
>platformer
lol wut? probably the top selling indie genre, if it's hard to sell then that's only because it's saturated so the competition is high
>rts
expectations for rts games are higher than what 99.99999% of indie devs can deliver on
>multiplayer games
low confidence in an indie dev's ability to build, maintain, and secure the backend, probably too small of a playerbase for true online gameplay, a lot of genres seem to opt for indirect competition where you compete against cached versions of other players' builds
>party games
people just want to play nintendo with their friends, not indie slop
>shmups
??? lots of indie shmups, similar to platformers, lots of competition so you can't just phone it in and expect to see sales
>beat em ups
do these even still exist? was hard for even professional studios to make this genre fun, has to be carried by art, music, and story even more than an rpg

None of what you wrote is truth, bing bing wahoo platformers that aren't tendie always do extremely bad. Mobile games outside of gacha or established IPs are pretty much a dying breed.
Shmups have never sold well, Ikaruga despite always being in "it's my le favorite shooty tooty" lists never sold past 1 million copies.

>Ikaruga has sold approximately 33,860 physical units in Japan for the Dreamcast and GameCube versions, while the Xbox Live Arcade version sold about 137,088 digital units on the Xbox 360, and the PC version sold around 128,543 digital units on Steam as of 2018.

VR games are hard to sell because of steam's dogshit algorithm. PCVR is literally too niche to make VR games stay on the front page for long if at all.
You -have- to sell for the quest even though there is a sizable number of PCVR users - you can't reach them. It fucking sucks because the quest hardware is so bad which means we'll never get super high fidelity VR games like Alyx because of Valve's retardation. FFS they were so invested in VR as the future of gaming but their algorithm is killing PCVR.

Bro, planes are falling out of the sky and corporations are still not dropping cheap Pajeet labor.
I'm convinced that the ruling class knows that everything is falling down a cliff but instead of trying to fix anything they are trying to escape with anything that's not bolted to the floor.
Media is not any different.
This is why every IP is getting milked with progressively worse sequels, remakes and reboots. They don't care about long term gains, they just want to drain every cent of value off of it before it's too late.

In order to get one those jobs you need to be a beneficiary of nepotism.
That's why the higher ups who worked on Concord and the latest Dragon Age are all employed at new AAA projects now despite losing hundreds of millions of dollars.
You could literally get a better ROI by making random choices.
Anyway, I'll stop replying now. I have a game to make.

What do you want to know about them? Are you working with Godot like I am?
They're just nice because they can have their own methods, properties, and signals that are all recognized by the editor, and by referencing them, the engine enforces a standard that makes everything more reliable and more readable.
As opposed to dictionaries where you better just be certain you formatted it right and are referencing the right keys when you manually type them out every time.

How would you implement a skill tree as the upgrade path for mid-run progression in a Vampire Survivors like? I don't mean the technical side of it but the player facing side. What sort of skill tree would make sense in the context of a horde survival game?

I was thinking it would be cool to have a skill tree or grid of some sorts that sets each character apart. Hoping it would give it a bit more of an RPG feel.

here's how you get god tier character designs (faces not clothes and all that). take a photograph of some person online and make them look fucked up with the liquify tool in Photoshop like this. Then set their opacity low and draw a cartoon based on their proportions on top of them. EZ PZ iconic unique characters, literally works every single time for cartoons.

I wonder if I should focus on learning how to model and animate humans or do monsters as well.
with the ultimate goal 5+ years in the future to do a Deep Down like..
Obviously, the two would be needed. but the difficulty modifier is higher and usefullness(such as being an artslut) is lower for monsters. Even in souls almost everything is bipedal and quadpedals are mostly animated like shit. horror games? bipedals, maybe except dogs. So the best use of my time would be humans.
monster hunter teams are able to do it because people are paid for years to study references, experiment and build up knowledge, they aren't taught about animating dragons at school. A simpler way to say this is "Niche Knowledge".

I just can't take indie games seriously. Just knowing that it's indie gives it a shallow feeling, like reading fan fiction or looking at some retard's deviant art. Being "indie" means whatever they produce is inherently disingenuous compared to something produced by a real studio like Squaresoft where actual soul was infused into the game.

more of a behavior thing that i'm stuck on, i'm rewriting my horde script and i feel like i'm not 100% clear on what to do so i get stuck. like for example i'm coding the flanking part, but my mind is looping on how to detect the available flank positions there are multiple ways to do this it's just that i'm quite indecisive with it. also all the other edgecases stuff like if some horde units stuck do we have to spawn a new nav lead for some parts of the horde, how do we handle multiple horde targets etc. like i know multiple ways to solve, i just don't know what to choose.

Hard to put it into words. Im aware of some details being off and cant get rid of the feeling and just play the game. It might not even be because the game is not "good". This rarely happens with games made by big studios, if I dont like them its usually because they are "bad" but not because they feel "off". Big studios probably spend quite a bit on these small details, whatever they are.
Sorry this probably isnt that helpful.

Are you asking how much water is used (indirectly) to process one AI prompt โ€” for example, the hidden water use from data centers cooling computers when you send a prompt to me?

If so, hereโ€™s a clear estimate based on recent research:

Studies estimate that a single AI prompt to a large language model like ChatGPT or GPT-4 typically consumes about 0.5 to 5 liters of water โ€” mostly due to the energy used by data centers and the water used for cooling them.

A small, short text prompt might be closer to 0.5โ€“1 liter.

A long or complex prompt that takes more compute (e.g., big code or multi-turn conversations) might use a few liters more.

These numbers come from research papers such as โ€œMaking AI Less Thirstyโ€ by Shaolei Ren (2023), which found that training these models consumes huge water volumes, but everyday usage still adds up too โ€” for example, a conversation like this could use liters of water indirectly.

Key point:
The water is not directly wasted in your home โ€” itโ€™s used at power plants and data centers for cooling servers and producing the electricity they need.

If youโ€™d like, I can show the math behind this or compare it to everyday water use (like making a cup of coffee, which uses ~140 liters if you include growing the beans!). Just say yes and Iโ€™ll break it down!

That's normal, and not easy to overcome. The best way is to implement, test, and prototype. You're probably afraid to "waste time" by implementing the wrong thing, but you're wasting far more time implementing nothing. Accept the fact that not everything you make will be good, and that you will have to throw away things, refactor, and redesign.

From my experience, a behavior tree and a few steering behaviors is more than enough for most action games, unless the area is really really cluttered. You do not need to use navigation waypoints.

It's the Kenyan Helicopter problem. Lots of gamedevs, both here and elsewhere, indie and AAA alike, don't understand the fundamentals of game design. Instead, they create fake shell imitations of what they think the components of a game are and roughly glue them together into something that resembles a video game. However, once you dive deeper, you'll see that these "games" really make no sense. You'll find extraneous components added on that don't fit in or critical components are missing because the devs are just gluing together an arbitrary list of components that they know exists in other video games without understanding why those components are there.

I'm too broken to believe that anyone can want me so I can't try unless they show me they want it and that's something no girl will ever do. The one girl that ever did approach me first before I approached her was when I was at the height of depression and I was so idiotic that I didn't even realize that a girl fucking getting my number and then inviting me out to walks and to museums and shit was interested in me and I let it slip through my fingers. God did that when I was at my lowest just to taunt me. This life is nothing but a torture chamber for God's amusement

It's more amateur vs professional than it is indie vs corporate. Most indies aren't professional about their games and it shows in ugly art, store-bought assets, bad mechanics, sketchy writing, etc... And I mean that on a fundamental level, corporations are guilty of all those but they're professionally and intentionally ugly and bad.

The amateurishness of 99.999999999% of indie devs just isn't a deal breaker if the game has some redeeming quality.

So from my understanding, AI servers generate heat through their electricity, like typical PCs, and need to be cooled so they donโ€™t overheat. What they do is pump cold water from deep in the sea and ocean through their servers and shit to cool it off, which warms up the water.
But it sounds like itโ€™s just a cycle, since they pump the water back into the ocean, I imagine, itโ€™s not like the water vanishes

Video games are software products that require extensive engineering. Your average video game is more complicated than other types of engineering projects. Video games have the luxury of not being particularly dangerous or life threatening when they fail, and so they can be more complicated without as much risk.

the problem with Earth isn't the energy/heat we create because energy can't be created, only transferred from one place to another.
the problem is the more shit (including CO2) in the atmosphere the less Earth radiates the Sun's heat and the hotter Earth gets.
So it's not so much cooling GPUs that's the problem but what gets pumped into the atmosphere to generate that electricity.

You'll be rounded up and put into camps next. And that's a good thing.

But really, I'm perfectly happy with this development. For too long retards come here saying they're making a game and it's just some fucking coom game. If it were a good game it wouldn't need porn as a crutch, and if it were good porn it wouldn't need to be packaged as a game. You're not one of us, you never were, the thing you're making is inherently exploitative, and every time you join one of our demodays you fuck up the rankings because the wider itch.io gooner audience comes looking for fresh coom material and artificially pushes your dogshit game to the top of the page.

I'm truly philosophically opposed to coomer games, there's no reason for them to exist. Search google, 50 billion images of boobs. Why do you need a game for that? Oh you want a game you can goon to and edge yourself for 4 hours? You're mentally ill and the developer of the game you're playing is exploiting your obviously dopamine-addled porn-rotted brain. The games needed to satisfy such a sick person must inevitably plumb the depths of depravity hoping to spark one more numbed neuron in the sick mind of the customer so we end up at what is basically sanitized child porn

Honestly watching the income prospects of coomdevs crumble into dust is up there with watching journalists get laid off. The fact that you reprobates were able to steal a living from such shitty morally and creatively bankrupt behavior is a glitch that is long overdue for a correction. But don't worry... you can just remove all the porn and sell your game as, yknow, a game.

Does it make any difference for the player if you do A or B? If the player doesn't care then pick the easiest or fastest way to implement it and then move on to the next thing.

Around 100 coom games get banned from Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 coom games in the week around your release.
Eyes too big? Chest too flat? Underage character? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you unable to sell your game on Steam but you can't even get any money through Patreon or any other service dependent on global payment providers :)

Take all the "coomgame success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and realize that they never had to go up against Visa and Mastercard, what degenerates thought was easy money and a shortcut to 'making it' just went up in smoke

No money, no social kudos except from other degenerates online, your family would disown you if they found out what you were making, all to produce a game that your braindamaged audience will forget after they've masturbated. Even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" of making a successful coom game all you've actually done is make a bunch of men cum, and that's gay.

I don't even use AI to code, more like a teacher/mentor thing I talk to when I get stuck doing something and tossing ideas and questions. That's the best use of it for me.

Whenever I ask it to code it starts to spit out so much unnecessary code that takes me ages to debug and understand and how to implement, big waste of time. I'd rather just write it myself.

Coomer faggots have ruined the internet with their degeneracy, porn has destroyed the minds of a generation, zoomers got psyopped into trooning out because they grew up with access to the internet.

It's time to start fixing things. And sure, if the payment providers are only cutting off the pornographers that aren't their jewish friends at Mindgeek, then people will notice that and we'll get to it in good time.

In my game (tactical grid based RPG) I could make AI that wouldn't make any mistakes. And I did test it in one fight and no one liked it. So I made it dumber.
But I heard some designer say is that the perception of "good AI" is far more important, and that there are tricks to do that without making AI too good for players to enjoy. One trick is for the AI to announce what they'll do before they do it, like
>Hit him with a grenade! (and then another NPC throws a grenade)
or things like that. Basically the dirty little secret of PvE is that gamedevs can make the enemies much "smarter" but players hate that so enemies must seem smart while giving players many opportunities to beat them.

the bug was _ready() is called on the script on the scene when the scene is inside a preload() statement

even though _ready() is only meant to be called when you add it to the tree

so I have a global
>var buttonscn:PackedScene=preload(res://etc)
then in my function its like
>var butinst:Control=buttonscn.instantiate()
>butinst.neededvar1=this
>butinst.neededvar1=that
>target.add_child(butinst)#this triggers _ready() to be called
and the _ready needs those neededvar 1/2 to be not null or you get an error

so when you start the app and actually get to that part it works fine, but during startup there is red errors, because that preload() line at global scope runs the _ready() function on it even though it isn't added to any tree... goDONT!!!!

btw godot nodes can't have any arguments to their constructors which is why you have to assign the variables manually one at a time, and then put all the constructor logic in the added-to-dom handler _ready() instead of the constructor _init()

although now I add them all at once as params through a fake pseudo-constructor and put all the code in there too and left the _ready mostly empty

still, they allowed themselves to make breaking changes on the 3->4 transition and they couldn't figure out this shit? damn

Steady progress continues, today was mostly code refactoring but I also added few new features thanks to simpler code. Polygons can now be edited afterwards, though the feature is clumsy to use so definitely needs some refining. Also I just noticed there's sometimes memory corruption going on, no idea yet why but destroying and reloading the level seems to trigger it which causes weird behavior and crash. Also added camera controls so now it's possible to move around the world and zoom in/out in the level editor.

you can put the structs at global scope (so long as you know how many you need) and they won't go away.

you can also declare them as static when inside the function and they wont go away, the downside is that if you call the function again it brings back the same one again doesn't make a new one.

normally in a game you would do things like spawn enemies for the player who can then kill them. you would use free() on the enemy struct when he got killed, then remove the reference to it. it is good to set pointer = null after doing free(pointer) because de-referencing a null pointer will give you an immediate error you can understand, whereas de-referencing a "valid" pointer that points to data that has already been free()'d is going to cause chaos

but it is faster to re-use and not free+malloc again

There's so much fighting you do against it because it was designed with the idea that it's going to be babby's first game engine, but if you really want to use it properly you have to be a level 9000 programmer to get over the difficulty hurdle which climbs up to mt everest as soon as you try to do anything serious with it.

ff is jrpg lite movie game, dq is hardcore jrpg that barely has a story beyond the setting and infrequent quest updates (go here, go there)

>I got a hunch that you're the exception or else there'd be a bunch of people churning out RPGmaker games like that
rpgmaker can't create a proper dq clone unless you massively rewrite parts of the engine

If you're really coding in juanscript then you pretty much have to find a way to avoid using them because they make no fucking sense.
