Bungie looks like they were being honest with themselves and realized not many new players are jumping into the game at this point, so they are just trying to extract as much time as they can from the hardcore. All the changes made this expansion are for hardcore grinders. They removed all obstacles that prevent you from going into a mindless grind (portal has far less menu, loading, vendor ranks and bounties, no moving around destinations) and even more ridiculous things to grind for like new confusing stat system that has messed up how everything works, weapon and armor tiers, modifiers, etc.

Witness should have had one of his more serious and ghost-like concept designs. The goofy appearance is a major criticism for the final villain of the saga.

Also his end goal of just freezing everything in place does not even align with the darkness motif when compared to other main villains like Oryx or Nezarac. Hell it doesn't even make sense with the initial collapse actually killing most of humanity outright.

And the concept of an evil collective was fumbled. It should have been more esoteric and not Bungie's baby commentary on collectivism.

The Hunter loadout is actually pretty nice and balanced. You've got some gimmick builds and some old classics that will get you through the season. They talked about concepts they had for crafting back in Witch Queen and Lightfall when they were overhauling the currencies. Originally, crafting was almost exactly that: You get a blank gun and you have to get currencies for the perks, like a Rampage token or a Bait And Switch token, by dismantling gun drops with those perks. Just enhance what you've got. If you don't, just craft the roll when you get the pattern. Everyone wins.

After playing starcrossed a gorillion times the last few days I noticed it probably has the best way bungo has done hp gating for a non raid/dungeon boss. Instead of it just getting an immune shield it spawns those two clusters of goblins that can give a shield to it and you have to kill the goblins before that, and the toblins form a shield conga line so if they do shield the boss you gotta kill the goblin chain, but you can stop them from even shielding the boss at all. Why is this the only time they did hp gating like this? It feels more natural and good then just instant immune shields, now go do this slop mechanic. Especially since if you have good AOE shit you can insta nuke both clusters of goblins each time. Also the platforming sections are super short and dont overstay their welcome at all. It took years but I finally like this mission.

Rasputin was problematic (god I hate this word) in many aspects. He was too powerful to write around, his existence created some plotholes that desperately needed plugging, and the execs would probably want to remove a popular Russian-themed characted since the war in Ukraine began, they had another KEK situation where Titan's IB armor ported from D1 had leather straps forming the letter Z on the shoulder pad, and they did a stealth update to remove the semblance, but unlike KEK it was never mentioned in patch notes or anywhere else.

Rasputin didn't really work as an ally given he solves a lot of the more "local" conflicts by existing. Just warmind laser house salvations civilian population into dust and just side step the whole campaign. Which is why any time he was at full power he ended up bitchslapped or switched off. He doesn't work as a villain either since he could do the same to guardians. He is complicated enough to give Vex simulations trouble, strong enough to at least calculate the crippling of the traveller, but didn't really work in the era of the game he was present for.
A Rasputin revived now would be kind of sick with what they are setting up with Maya. Different visions of what humanity should do without the witness bearing down. Maya wants a literal return to the golden age (and send shithole earth back to deal with the collapse). Clovis wants to rebuild humanity in his image, achieve his LUCA goals, and then you would have Rasputin / warmind expansionism through military force, with the guardian faction not wanting any of this shit and just wanting to secure their back yard and have their gentle kingdom ringed with spears
